Helping Others

Recently I have signed up to become a voluntary 1:1 telephone befriender for The Alzheimer's Society. I am going through the checks now and hope to start soon. It is something I've always wanted to do. I am fortunate to support people in my day job working for Barnardo's and I am sure I'll gain as much happiness from this as hopefully those I speak to will.

That's really a great thing GTFC. You are clearly a caring, humane kind of individual who enjoys giving. And I'm sure that in return you'll be rewarded by the good feeling that helping others gives. 🙏

In a way it's a bit selfish of me too because I love helping people or supporting them to feel better about themselves. Really appreciate your comments, thank you. There's so much good in this world.

Good morning

I hope you are well

I think you have tapped into something I am hoping to do

I am trying to become a Wills and Probate lawyer purely as a result of caring for an elderly and vulnerable parent who suffered from dementia

I have periods of anxiety abs depression which can cloud my self belief but knowing what you want to do which can bring joy and happiness for others and yourself should make yourself feel fulfilled

in reply to Roukaya

Thank you, we seem to share common values and your future career will be underpinned by helping others which is magical. I truly believe there is so much good in the world. I wish you well in your career. Have you heard of the 'Action for Happiness' monthly calendar? This is something I download and look at to help.

Is that the Dementia Friends Scheme? Looked on their website and didn’t see anything listed about being a telephone befriender.

in reply to Stinkpot

It is called a side by side telephone volunteer around the area local to me if that helps.

A lovely post to read, I wish you well with your new venture. Its so wonderful to be a help to people. I'm particularly interested in your work with Barnardos too. I've recently printed off the June happiness calendar and sent it to people who I know are struggling. I've been writing to people I know who are locked down alone.

My mother had dementia for 8 years and I can tell you to be able to speak with someone for support has a great benefit, and enables the carer to carry on for longer. Thank you for posting.

in reply to sunnyweek

Thank you so much. I didn't want it to come across as a 'look at me post' but a post about the excitement and joy of helping others too. I really appreciate your reply and the world is filled with people that offer goodness. Your writing will have given that person that day something to look forward and open and cherish.

At Barnardo's I support mainly children but also adults with their mental and emotional health which I'm privileged to do.

Volunteers have a generosity of spirit and a breathtaking selflessness that leaves me grateful, humbled and a little dazed.

I rely on the goodwill and kindness of hospice volunteers, and I have first-hand experience of their willingness to go the extra mile.

Your kindness won't be overlooked, nor will it be forgotten.

In gratitude, TDS ❄️
