A question of colour

I used to frequently go to a particular development in Murcia in Spain. When the properties were first built the buyers were told that the houses had to be painted white or yellow.

As always someone painted their house a different colour - a fine purple/red which stood out quite nicely. Invariably one of his neighbours denounced him (anonomously) to the local council , along the lines of 'You can't do that and I'm not having it'.

In due course three officials turned up, (one to read, one to write, and one to supervise the two intellectuals). They produced a fine set of forms, asked many questions and finally produced a sheet with many financial penalties identified.

They smiled at him, which seemed to make him more nervous. They looked at each other and tore up the penalties sheet

"Your house is a fine traditional Murcian red. It is good to see traditional colours being used. There will be no further action. We will go and inform the neighbour who denounced you and is standing on his doorstep over there""

Haha lanc2, no such thing as anonymity in Spain then! And where colours are concerned there's the 16th century saying that "When all candles be out, all cattes be gray.” (John Heywood, and later Ben Franklin).

You post reminded me of a time when I was young, just started going out with my friends, going to the local bars and restaurants as you do when you're young. I had this brightly colored, flowered dress on. Now I thought the dress was lovely until a passing young man said, that dress, looks like your wearing a roll of wall paper. I never wore the dress again. It has just made me laugh though, thinking about it. xx

You have just reminded me of a time when I had lost some weight and I had put a dress on that I hadn’t worn for ages because it was too small . I went to see my mum and said, “do you remember this dress? don’t you think it looks good”. to which my mum said, “ it only looks fit for the rag bag” When I got home I threw it in the bin 🤣😂🤣

It's good you have funny memories of your mum to laugh at now and can be reminded of her character. I lost my dad about 16 years ago, I still miss him. My mum is 80 and I just couldn't be without her. So I can only imagine how you must feel. 👍😊🌷

I used to write stories about our telephone calls she was so funny, I would just laugh and laugh, I’m so glad I wrote them and so are all her five grandchildren, at her funeral my husband made a little booklet with some of the stories which everyone loved. She chose her own funeral music and she went out to We’ll meet again which before the actual service I found amusing lol. Now when I hear it 😭😭😭 cherish your mum Bobby because you may think you know how special she is but it’s only when they pass you really realise. Xx

I’m amazed that any officials in Spain followed the complaint up! I lived in a new development in Spain once.

They were checking up on illegal extensions so they could fine the owners. Quite lucrative.

It gets better. The builder went bankrupt leaving an estate of 5000 houses that is somewhat unfinished. The local authority did not adopt it and placed a ban on building any new extensions, swimming pools, etc. They still charged rates however.

Over time a stand off developed. The LA said this estate is not adopted and we won't give permission for any further development of any sort. The owners said OK and went ahead and built their swimming pools, extensions or whatever.

Every now and then the inspectors come round, recognise the situation and issue fines, which duly get paid. The rates get upgraded and everyone is happy, If you don't pay your rates they write them off after 4 years. However you have to careful if you are buying as rates are attached to the property and not the owner. All good fun and you can buy some very nice houses quite cheaply as potential buyers tend to be a bit twitchy about it all.

always that one guy... we have a neighbor with a house colored salmon, brick red, and white. It doesn't stand out to me as I'm colorblind, but I'm told it's obnoxious.
