Spinning

I woke up about 7.30 this morning and felt fine. I dozed off again until about 7.50 and when I opened my eyes the whole room was spinning quite fast. I had to lay there with eyes closed for about 15 minutes before it calmed down. I had to get up then as my dog needed to go out to relieve herself, but just wondering what caused this. Could it be stress and/or anxiety?

Hi there, I have had this happen on &off for years, sometimes when I wake up I daren't get out of bed because when I tilt my head side ways the room feels like it’s spinning which makes me feel sick, I have fallen over numerous times when getting up & if I bend over to pick something up I can loose my balance. It can be difficult to walk in a straight line I feel like I’m drunk. My doctor did a test on me which involved walking in a straight line, bending & crouching down at which point I felt dizzy & fell backwards, she seems to think it’s Vertigo. If it starts happening frequently you should probably think about going to see your doctor.

If it’s vertigo, a DIY procedure that involves resetting the crystals in the ear can often relieve that. It has to do with lying on your back with your head off the edge of the bed. Ask your medical person about it. I hope that you can get it under control. I had an aunt who had it, and my uncle ( the other side of the family) who has quite severe vertigo. If is quite unpleasant, to say the least. Stay as well as possible, and good luck.

Hi Misty.

Your symptoms are the same that I suffered with before being diagnosed with Vertigo, I now take Betehistine to keep it at bay, but it rears its ugly head now and again..... see your doctor asap!

Hi there, it could be a symptom of a number of things so you need the opinion of your GP. If you are sitting in a chair, get up slowly from it. If you are in bed, sit up slowly, get to the edge of the bed and sit there for a few minutes before actually standing up. You don't want to have any falls so be very careful while you are experiencing these episodes. 😊😊

Could be BPPV which is a type of vertigo. Crystals in the ear move out of place and you get dizzy and nauseous. Prochlorpromazine (stemetil) works well. It goes away but comes back. Increase risk with age. Sounds mild if only lasted a short while. Mags

Could be vertigo but I would think it could be Postural Hypertension. A drop in blood pressure from laying to standing up. Feel very giddy and sometimes passing out for a short time.

Hi. I didn’t even get to stand up from laying but will get it checked out if it happens again. Could be build up of stress from being on my own during this current crisis. Heard yesterday that the people who’d made an offer on my house pre-covid were still interested but wanted to see where lockdown was going first. Could mean I lose the flat that I had hoped to move into. Also not been taking my meds often till afternoon so have now set alarm on phone.

Thanks for your response though x

HI Misty. I am wondering if you may have Labrynthitis. It's inflammation in the inner ear usually caused by a viral infection. My husband has had this twice and was quite bad with it. Maybe you could ring your GP and have a chat if it keeps happening.

Hi there.I experienced something similar at the start of lockdown. My husband suggested trying eardrops as it might be a build up of wax.I did and after about a week it cleared up and I havent had any recurrence. It worked for me but of course every one is different.Had it not worked I would have rung my gp.

It happedned on and off for about 2 days-mainly when I got out of bed.I had moments of losing my balance as well.I used the olive oil based drops,(Otex I think) no nasty chemicals in it.

Hi Misty,

Sounds like a trip to ENT might not be a bad idea. I have Meniere's disease and what you are describing sounds familiar but not without seeing a consultant could this be diagnosed. Just for the record stress and anxiety exacerbate it. It could also be Low Blood pressure or you got up too quick or just a case of a mild attack of vertigo.. Take care.x

Thanks. I do have an appointment booked with ENT due to my thyroidechtomy, if it goes ahead. I will talk to them about it. I hadn’t stood up, just opened my eyes. Also think could have been stress and anxiety as suffer from both since release from hospital. X

Try not to be too hard on yourself. I was in A and E last week and this whole virus episode with the masks etc. Is all a bit surreal. So i can only imagine how stopping in must have felt..

You are not on your own where anxiety and stress is concerned I think everyone to a certain extent has developed some. Take care x

Thanks for that. I keep on being told not to be so hard on myself but it’s difficult especially at the moment x
