Happy Mother’s Day everyone.
This is today’s birding walk. At an old Russian orchard before California became a state. On the north coast, Fort Ross State Historic Park.
The Russians came here to raise food for their colonies in Alaska. They were here for a decade or so before realizing the climate wasn’t conducive for crops. They were basically squatters. So far away that no one bothered them.
They left a great orchard and shot a lot of cannons at nothing because it was fun and they had nothing better to do.
It was that or drink vodka and eat borscht. Maybe they did all three.
