Quotation for Thursday 30th April 2020

Hi everyone,

I'm a huge fan of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. I love the colourful vibrancy of her work but also admire her struggle against all odds to continue to paint. Stricken in childhood with polio, she was then badly injured in a bus crash and spent her life in awful pain whilst producing what I find to be the most amazing work, much of it portraits and still life. Her life was filled with controversy. She was avant-garde and had a passionate on/off relationship with her fellow artist husband, Diego Rivera, who was equally controversial.

It's all a story of life lived to capacity, and of a person who just got on with it, despite all adversity. A real survivor. Which is why I've chosen her as my inspiration today.

Speaking of life she said: "Beauty and Ugliness are a mirage, because others end up seeing what's inside of us".

Do you agree?

Have a great day everyone.

Yes I like that picture.

We are all what's inside aren't we?

Have a good day.

Oh I totally agree and I can see the vibrancy and determination in the painting.

The words are very poignant and powerful.

I agree with that. What I'm drawn to in the painting is the cigarette in her hand. It is an unusual painting, I like it very much it has so much interesting detail about it. 🤔😊

It's such an odd sight isn't it bobbybobb, to our eyes anyway. Maybe not so much in 1941, but even then I can't think of another picture with a casual 'ciggie' in anyone's hands and I had a sudden giggle thinking of how all those stately home portraits would look if their subjects were doing the same thing! I have the feeling though, that even if Frida Kahlo had been told of the dangers, she'd have gone on doing it anyway! 😀

You can have all the beauty in the world but inside what is what really counts that’s the most beautiful such a lovely Painting not sure I would have the parrots on me though frighten of birds I’ve never done me any harm it’s just the way it is but a beautiful picture👍😁

I have seen a number of documentaries about her life and work over the years... I also have a really gorgeous glossy book of her paintings as well. I find her life story more interesting , inspiring and gripping than her painting style, to be honest.

I'm not sure I would agree with what she says in the quotation. I would say that beauty and ugliness are definitely in the eye of the beholder, but I don't agree that people see what's inside you. I believe many of us go through our entire lives without ever being truly "seen" and known for the people we are inside us. I hope that doesn't sound sad, I think it's just a fact. But then, there are many different ways of looking at life and the world, aren't there? I don't think my disagreeing with her on that point means we would disagree on many other things. :-)

I too think there is a lot of ugliness inside as well as beauty. But I do appreciate what she was trying to say. 🙏
