Bisphosphonate increases risk for narrow angle glaucoma

I follow this site but no longer post and I pondered over whether to post the link below.

On balance, I’m posting the link to the Medscape study because of the risk. For those taking the med, it’s better to be informed and have eye checks which monitor narrow angle glaucoma. I have narrow angle glaucoma in both eyes which is checked regularly and I’m aware of symptoms which may suggest pressure is building to a dangerous level and needs attention. It can result in sight loss if not treated.

Don't worry about posting it - I posted about it 2 months ago when it first appeared in my Inbox and a reminder never hurts.

I think it is unlikely most people would ignore it as it does cause symptoms unlike the other sort of glaucoma and everyone here does tend to have GCA on their mind.

Sorry, I missed your earlier link. I wouldn’t have posted had I realised. Most users here are familiar with a whole range of risks associated with both the conditions and the meds. It’s better to be aware and narrow angle can be easily and routinely checked by the optician and monitored for change. I know, over the years, that for me, one eye pressure is routinely higher than the other, and outside the normal range. But it’s ‘normal’ for me and so far hasn’t needed corrective surgery.

Oh no - no apology needed, as I say it reinforces the message and I only posted the link for the post I wrote to go with it.

And not to forget that people who are new here might not have seen it the first time.

Thank you for posting as I hadn't seen the earlier post. They want me to take biphosphinates so this is useful information as I'm already at risk of glaucoma as it seems to run in the family.

Thank you for sharing this - I wasn’t aware of the glaucoma risk.

My father had acute glaucoma and was rushed to hospital when he was 62 with severe pain. He was in hospital for 5 days and was operated on. That was in 1977. I developed narrow angle closeure when I was about 64 and was given eye laser treatment in both eyes soon after to help release pressure should it occur. Last year I was given eye cataract surgery (74 years old). Although I had mild cataracts, the surgery was to cure narrow angle closure for good. The effect was a total success and I no longer worry that what happened to my Dad would happen to me. I feel very lucky.

That’s interesting, I had cataract surgery on one eye two years ago, at similar age. Since then the pressure in that eye is consistently lower than it used to be and optician suggested separate narrow angle surgery may never be needed. Awaiting cataract surgery in the other eye, but it’s a 3 year wait time. Pressure there is consistently above the normal range by around 5 points but that’s consistent, for me. It’s good to take comfort from the few blessings!

A three year wait seems a long time but things seem steady at the moment so hopefully all will be well. Good wishes.
