wormwood tea?

agingfeminist profile image
17 Replies

I was given a collection of herbs for making infusions with.

mint, sage and wormwood. There is some research that wormwood can be a steroid sparer in Chron's disease

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/172...

Has anyone tried it? Are there any risks? Apparently you shouldn't take it for more than a few weeks.

I assume sage and mint are ok.

Many thanks for any ideas or info re these herbal teas.

Obviously if they used it in a study it is safe to take with pred. But what other medications are you on?

wasn't really worried about interaction with steroids...just wondered if anyone had tried it and whether they had any other side effects...perhaps I'll sample a weak infusion.

Probably the best approach - just because something didn't suit someone else, it might be fine for you. And vice versa ...

It probably will be fairly weak anyway - but if it’s says you shouldn’t use it for more than a few weeks would make me wary -

There are mentions of it not being good for kidneys..

Lot more detail here

healthline.com/nutrition/wh...

and they say

"High doses of wormwood may result in digestive upset, kidney failure, nausea, vomiting, and seizures. However, you’re unlikely to experience these side effects if you’re taking it in small doses, such as those found in tea"

Certainly don’t want to go down the absinthe route! 🤦🏻‍♀️

My gosh wormwood is used to make absinthe. As they say ‘Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder’!

If it is that good - shouldn't be secret ... OTOH ...

It could be scarce of course! People keep the location of mushrooms secret around my area.

I decided to get some advice from deepseek (AI) and it said:

Autoimmune Disease and Steroids: Since you have PMR and are taking steroids, your immune system is already modulated. Wormwood may stimulate the immune system or interact with your medications, so it’s crucial to consult your doctor before consuming it.

It also gave the warnings the PMR pro found. Thanks PMR pro for the alerts.

I was given the wormwood together with sage and mint leaves as a gift. The wormwood is out.

Hi agingfeminist! I think the mistake people make with any tea is to let it brew for too long. They make useful hydration drinks, however, when made correctly and, in the case of wormwood and the more bitter ones, with a tiny bit of honey. Wormwood on the nipple was once used as a weaning ploy!

thank you. the wormwood on the nipple sounds like an early form of aversion therapy!

I have never made sage tea...do you know how many leaves and how long to brew for?

Seems to depend - do you want a delicate fresh cup or something more like builders tea??
