I have my covid winter jab this week but I'm in two minds about going ahead . I have pmr plus diabetes and heart problems so have been down as vulnerable. I've read lately how many have had serious side effects even death and I can't get this out of my head !

I am having a flare at moment not severe but still there .not sure why i have suddenly become so scared !

Any advice?

Thanks in advance

I have no idea where you read that about side effects - but believe me, far more people have died of Covid because they rejected the vaccine than have died of the vaccine. There is certainly one article about the death rate with vaccines that is totally biased because they quote false figures - I wrote about it in another "do I don't I" post.

You are vulnerable and if you did get Covid you are at higher risk than somebody without those risk factors. My friend who wasn't ever classed as vulerable developed Long Covid and cerebellar ataxia after having Covid - she can only walk with difficulty and speaking is difficult. Having the vaccine reduces the risk of developing Long Covid.

I had my Covid jab a week ago today. I had a bit of a headache after but that only lasted for a short time. I certainly haven’t had serious side effects and neither have the 4 people I know who have had it recently. I really did not want to get a bad dose of Covid on top of everything else so was eager to have it. It is your decision, of course, but I think there are bigger risks from not having it and getting a bad dose of Covid.

Where have you read that? Not from a reputable source I bet…and as stated you are one of those people for whom vaccines are important.

Not sure what’ dose of Pred you are on at present , but if it’s single figure and adrenals are struggling they can mess with your mind.

I'm on 6mg at the moment. I never hesitated with my jabs before I just know a lot that aren't having it now but then they have no issues. I have had and have stress at the moment so I think it's just feeling vulnerable. I'm know I will go ahead , think I just had to put my feelings out there if that makes sense rather than it keep going around in my head !! 🙄

I think being at your dose, it is adrenals making you uncertain of things that you would have normally taken in your stride… I’m sure most of us don’t realise how much the adrenals control, until they aren’t doing it properly.

.. and yes don’t bottle it up… that’s why we are here - to be a sounding board… most of us have been there at some time or another.. 😊

Please have vaccine to protect yourself… of course everyone has a choice whether to accept one or not, but those not having it are putting others in a difficult situation.

You are more likely to have serious side effects and even death if you do NOT get vaccinated and catch Covid.

I had my COVID jab last week and no problems at all, but we are all different.

Listen to PMRpro! You don't want long Covid, nor the chance for a serious case, and the death rates don't compare by a long shot.

I have mine booked today and started being on two minds, as I don’t want a flare, but have been reassured but the responses. Thank you all, I will go ahead and have it.

Hi, I had mine yesterday. - Moderna - I wanted the Pfizer (for no other reason than that that was the one I've always had bar one) but couldn't get it down here! I hate all these vaccinations we seem to have nowadays - Covid/Flu/Shingles/RSV (not eligible for RSV yet) but I suppose that's the thing with ageing and I would imagine that getting the diseases must be a whole lot worse and Long Covid is always a threat!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toPusph

Shingles and RSV are both on-offs though, well, 2x for the shingles but within a few months.

Having flu or shingles is no fun. Not that convinced about RSV since because of the way RSV is passed on, it seems more worth it if you have very close-up and personal contact with small people and the age group they are offering it to are probably past that,

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply toPMRpro

Probably correct about RSV -but think NHS are looking from a view of keeping hospital winter numbers down as much as anything.

I have had flu covid pneumonia and shingles jabs in the last month and no reaction to any of them.

I confess I am very pro vaccine/ My niece contracted Covid at the age of 22 in March 2020. She has long Covid, little quality of life to the extent of being eligible for PIP. She was not classed as vulnerable in any way, fit and healthy. No brainer for me

I'm not having anymore as I started with heart problems after my 2nd one Pfizer I've never had flu shingles or pneumonia ones and rarely go out. Even my gp had heart concern after having it and she's only young

Yes it's a mixed choice from people

Bramble2000 profile image

you’re far more likely to become seriously ill or worse by contracting Covid than you are from side effects from the jab, in my op

I've had all the Covid and Flu jabs during my four plus years of PMR and Pred, with no problems. I've also had Covid and am sure it would have been a whole lot worse if I hadn't had them. Covid, Flu and RSV booked for the next few weeks. Interestingly I'm more intrigued to see how these go as I've been off Pred for about six weeks.

I put a similar question on here a few days ago about having the Covid jab. I was down to 2mg and very slowly now starting to work my way down to 1MG. Like you, I was concerned about any side effects and setting myself back in terms of my dosage of steroids. After reading the answers I decided to go ahead as my last Covid jab was over two years ago. I had the jab this morning and so far everything is fine. Slight soreness of the arm, but that’s it. I even forgot to take some paracetamol which I normally do just before the vaccination in case I get any aches and pains.

rachelbell profile image
rachelbell in reply toRuins67

Had it this morning ☺

I had mine Thursday morning and I did get a sore arm. I have to admit that on Friday I didn’t realise entirely what was happening and I started feeling really tired and achy by the time Friday evening came. Apparently, having talked to a number of other people, this one seems to have had more fluey effects than previous ones. People like me who never reacted to previous COVID vaccinations seemed to have a day or so with flu symptoms - aching, headaches, and tiredness. I’m now feeling a lot better and I suppose if I’d actually got COVID given what the vaccinations been like I could well have been very ill with it.

I am very vulnerable, but I have the jabs, I think a couple of weeks of not being right is better then having Covid xx

I feel exactly the same as you, mine is due next week and I am seriously thinking of not having it. The Moderna one made me feel very unwell in the Spring. Pfizer no problems previously. I have also heard things on You tube about the Moderna one releasing nano particles and DNA that gets in to your cells. It said that Australian medics are lobbying their parliament to have all Moderna and Pfizer vaccines suspended. I wish I hadnt listened to it now

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toKASHMIRI1

If you heard it on YouTube the chances are it rubbish!!!! WiKi has its moments but this article explains WHO is trying to take this action - their names over time say it all. They are the Oz version of Andrew Wakefield who fraudulently claimed vaccines were dangerous.

"The Australian Vaccination-risks Network Inc., formerly known as the Australian Vaccination-Skeptics Network (AVsN), and before that known as the Australian Vaccination Network (AVN), is an Australian anti-vaccination pressure group[16] registered in New South Wales. As Australia's most controversial anti-vaccination organisation,[8] it has lobbied against a variety of vaccination-related programs, downplayed the danger of childhood diseases such as measles and pertussis, championed the cause of alleged vaccination victims, and promoted the use of ineffective alternatives such as homeopathy"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austr...

mRNA from vaccines does NOT "get into our cells" and nanoparticles are used to transport medications and cosmetics in many products. I won't get into an argument about whether that is good or bad - but it is how many things work including cosmetics.

Good morning PMRpro I am thankful that you replied because I have a recollection that you commented on this person a while back. Its Doctor John Campbell on you tube. Who went from pro vaccination to anti vaccination and he presents everything so seriously and with all loads of information he has dug up from somewhere. I had stop watching him after he showed a video of long alien looking stringy things that had allegedly been found in the post mortem arteries of covid victims. It was just to Doctor Whoish for me. But the headline of the Australian one made me once again get sucked in.

I have always found Dr John Campbell to be very informative. He researches his topics in great depth, uses publicised government data to illustrate his concerns and interviews renowned specialists in their field to clarify his delivery.

He is and does. However - although I too found some of his earlier videos quite good and explanatory, his later stuff seemed to have lost the plot a bit and he was holding forth on things that were really beyond his expertise and coming to conclusions that were innaccurate at best and dangerous at worst as he started spreading Covid misinformation. Data can be manipulated and/or used selectively.

At the end of the day it’s a personal choice as to whether we have the vaccination. My Covid booster was due last Saturday but I went down with Covid on the previous Wednesday. I’m on day 9 now and still feeling terrible. I’ve had every symptom that Covid can throw at you and spent most of the last week in bed. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy!!

Thank you. I’m much worse than when I had it in 2022. I mentioned last week that my gp had refused to prescribe me antivirals this time as she said I didn’t qualify. I didn’t even get the opportunity to speak to the doctor only the receptionist who told me to ring 111 or go to A&E if I got it bad!

mine is on wednesday! i had flu jab last week with zero issues not even a sore arm.. covid next..Its weighing up risks but seems to me getting covid badly is the worse risk. Specially now its everywhere and hardly anyone tests. Easily accessible stats would be nice, when these newer vaccines were developed everyone knew it was a rush in a crisis and it was not possible to do as much long term follow up as you'd ideally want for anything new, but there has been time elapsed now so longer term side effects for some people should have been noticed. Does anyone know where this would be published? They did stop using Astra Zeneca (which I had for first injection with no issues) quite fast for younger people so they do track and react to side effects.

One way or another, our immune systems are going to be challenged. It might be flu. It might be covid. It might be the vaccines. The difference is that only the vaccines have been tested and proven to leave the vast majority unharmed. Mother nature doesn't care.
