While having a celebration of life for a dear friend I slipped and fell on a wet step off my deck. I came crashing done in my back breaking three ribs. This happened on this past Saturday. I received morphine in the hospital and sent his with a mussel relaxer. My question is should I upped my prednisone for a few days. The pain is pretty bad and I thinking prednisone may help.

injury and prednisone
I am so sorry, that must be excruciatingly painful. I recently re fractured an old rib injury, turning over on the surgical table where I was having spinal injections….yes the irony! It’s very depressing. I felt a horrible wrench and it has been very painful since. My GP didn’t think extra Pred would help as it’s bone injury not inflammation. As I am really struggling to reduce pred because of Avascular necrosis I am just going to stop my taper for a month but I do wonder if the stress caused would benefit from a boost. Do you mind saying how your pain relievers are working? I have ora morph, which works well but knocks me out. They are also stingy with it. What muscle relaxers are you on? Hope you feel better soon.
As said Pred won't help with pain per se, but the might stop and/or control a flare, which is a possibility. so just see how you go.
I fell off a landing 9 weeks ago, breaking 3 ribs and the pubic ramus in my pelvis. I resisted the urge to up Prednisone, sticking with the oral morphine provided and Extra Strength Tylenol at times when the pain wasn't so severe. At the 7 week mark healing was improved enough that I could put the pain meds away and I am moving around almost normally now, although babying the ribs a bit by avoiding lifting, and the pelvis by using a cane when going for long walks. I am glad that I didn't up my prednisone and am working my way through a 7 week taper form 8.5 mg to 8 mg of Prednisone which is going well after 2 failed attempts with the 5 week taper previously.
I empathize with you as rib fractures are painful and affect so many everyday movements, but hang in there, as "this too, shall pass".
Pred is an antiinflammatory - injuries are inflammation in a way but pred is unlikely to help them as they must heal to stop the pain. It MAY slow the healing process.
I broke my arm last year, ultimately had shoulder surgery and never altered my dosage. But, that's me....💞
