Can take Pred with a spoonful of yogurt -didn’t need to be a full meal.

Some related posts on weight -but plenty in FAQs -and main advice is - cut carbs…

Flavoured kefir yoghurt for me - particularly cherry or vanilla!

Alliekat65 profile image

does it need be fat free yoghurt ?

random901 profile image

Mine isn't!

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply toAlliekat65

Full fat is better - fat free may have sugar added - that's the no, no.

Alliekat65 profile image

ok thank you off to asda lol

Pippah45 profile image
Pippah45 in reply toDorsetLady

Even more of a no no is the fake sweeteners in fat free. I have done well on a Keto type diet - where fat is not the enemy.

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply toPippah45

Well it’s not any more is it, or another right sort of fat - sugar is…

Pippah45 profile image
Pippah45 in reply toDorsetLady

I used to be addicted to sugar 4 spoons of sugar in coffee etc. Gradually re-educated my palette and hardly use sugar in my house any more. A sweet treat occasionally but I can stay away from it :)

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply toPippah45

Used to have sweet tooth -blame my mother -think it was rebound after rationing in WW2. My in-laws always had lots of sugar in tea as well.

Might have one in coffee if it’s a bit on the strong side, but not other beverages..

As I don't take alendronic acid or stuff that's supposed to protect your gut, I do full fat dairy to max calcium & line my stomach.

Alliekat65 profile image
Alliekat65 in reply torandom901

I've got alrndronic and calc D( horse pills ) but as I'm overweight anyway the doc said to keep eye on it. just got weight for rheumatology

I have hard cheese. I was told the best thing is hard Swiss cheese although I usually have Comte.

Lickle profile image
Lickle in reply topiglette

I've always had a slight dairy intolerance to cow's cheeses so stick with Goat and sheep cheeses. The best hard cheese is the Spanish Manchego it's a sheep cheese.

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toLickle

I normally love cheese but Manchego and Edam are two I really dislike. I had a hard goat cheese recently at one of my cheese and wine tastings with an artisan cheese supplier and it really was lovely. I can’t remember the name though. I think it may have been English.

Lickle profile image
Lickle in reply topiglette

I love Roquefort, the Prince of (sheep)cheeses, but it is so expensive these days. Plus now I'm off carbs there's not much to put it on! Although I'm getting some gluten free bread and crackers now .

Loyd profile image
Loyd in reply toLickle

Ryvita cracker bread (not usual Ryvita crisp bread) 20 calories- brilliant!

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toLoyd

I occasionally have crackers but normally just cheese

The King of Cheeses yum yum

But I much prefer the French approach: cheese on a plate with a knife and fork ...

Lickle profile image
Lickle in reply toPMRpro

Or just crusty French bread no blurred. But can't get that bread here, or not allowed on no catbs.

Pippah45 profile image
Pippah45 in reply toLickle

It may sound a bit crazy but I found a crisp lettuce leaf worked quite well with cheese when I was trying to go gluten free. Fortunately I found no difference with or without gluten. My favourite at the moment is Peter's Yard.

Weight - cut your carbs, especially processed foods and added sugar and limit your fruit intake.

I take prednisone ~5.30 am with a few spoonfuls of unsweetened apple sauce.

Carnivoreyogi profile image
Carnivoreyogi

Yes to eating a few spoonfulls of high fat yogurt with the prednisone pills. Takes away the bitter taste and gives stomach what it needs to process the pills. I cut out all carbs when I went on prednisone and am on a strict keto diet. I've still gained some weight over the past 12 months--prednisone really does mess with the insulin and blood sugar and there is not much to be done about it. I do take berberine to manage blood sugar. But suspect that prednisone over rides that too.

Yogurt and often a banana when I take mine around 02:00 ish, been lucky though and never really had a weight problem and equally strangely my blood sugar levels and my Hba1c levels have gone down since being on Pred.

I have taken pred for over 4 years but never tasted it. Gulp it down with water after a meal or swallow with yogurt. I take pred at about1 a.m. (best time is around 2 a.m.) with a spoonful of plain yogurt...no chewing.

Cut the carbs..and then cut them some more...no bread, no pasta, no rice AND NO sugar...also no artificial sweetners...clear out the cupboards so there are no temptations hiding there...eat loads of veggies (not potatoes).

I also found it helpful to only have black coffee for breakfast (nothing after dinner at 7pm until lunch at midday)..you get used to it,

Don't forget to keep your calcium up...cheese and yogurt...and vitamin D3 (and K2)

You are going to be so healthy....shame about the PMR...

I have never eaten breakfast - only a cup of tea with a little milk. Hasn’t affected taking the pred and other meds. Recommend very low carb diet - it’ll make you feel so good.

HarmonyGranny profile image

I've been intermittent fasting for a couple of years now, and like you, don't eat breakfast. Swallow my pred pill with a cup of sugarless coffee. Fingers crossed I've gradually tapered from 25 to 5 mg in a year and symptoms have gone. Fingers crossed, this continues. Good luck to you and everyone else on this rocky journey! 😊

I put on a lot of weight 5 years ago when I first got diagnosed with PMR with taking steroids - went up from 80 to 86 kilos and felt dreadful.

I have bad arthritic ankles and really found walking hard.

I’ve never eaten breakfast in my life (like my father).

However with feeling so fat I just decided there and then to go on an extremely low carb diet 2 years ago.

I am now 60 kilos and have gone from size 18 to 12.

I feel fantastic and can’t believe how easy it was!!

I will NEVER go back to eating carbs.

Wish I’d done it 50 years ago! 😀😀

Hi, I don't eat in the morning as I don't enjoy it...but someone gave me advice to have my Preds at night with a little yoghurt.....As for weight I try to stick to Michael Moseley Keto diet...

I'm not a zealot about it and don't deny myself a drink or treat.....but I do treat them as treats.....

Good luck.

Thanks everyone I've been on slimming world weight watcherscetc so to find the low fat options have more sugar was a surprise.I did use yoghurt today and did find them easier as I'm not a breakfast person . do any of you eat brown/:wholemeal rice pasta instead of white or isnit a steer clear

I only have red milk in coffee as I don't like full fat

Thanks again guys

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toAlliekat65

Doesn't matter what colour flour is used - wholemeal pasta and brown rice are still carbs for the purpose of this exercise of cutting carbs with pred.

Pippah45 profile image
Pippah45 in reply toAlliekat65

Red top milk has more sugar in than full fat. Ditto single cream

random901 profile image
random901 in reply toPippah45

and precious little calcium, I believe ...

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply torandom901

Same, in fact marginally MORE, calcium as any other in the liquid - but without fat a lot less is absorbed by the body.

random901 profile image
random901 in reply toPMRpro

Good heavens! But the full stuff is yummy.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply torandom901

Quite - and really not that high fat relatively speaking! The skim stuff is pointless - might as well add water to your tea! There is also evidence that full fat dairy is actually good for you,

I don’t eat until lunch time but I have a hard boiled egg in the morning before I take my pred. No carbs and only about 80 cals.

Hi Alliekat65

I see your GP prescribed you Alendronic Acid. Did he also want you to have what is called a Dexa Scan? ( bone density). It is quite a harsh drug and it might be a case of you not needing to take it, if your bone health is good. The scan helps get a baseline and should be repeated every 2/3 years whilst taking your Prednisolone.

Others with more knowledge will hopefully be along with more explanation.

You are doing so well, it’s all quite daunting isn’t it! Just don’t overdo that housework or walking those 3 dogs, you can make them watch Crufts it starts today!

Best wishes to you.

I take my pred around 8.00 a.m. after a breakfast of porridge and blueberries. I try to keep my carbs low. I don't restrict myself completely, but I don't eat any pastries, cakes etc. I've cut out sugar and processed foods. I do eat full fat foods though, like yoghurt and butter because I don't like the additives put into low fat foods. My daily treat is dark chocolate! Good luck....
