update on dissolving prednisolone

this is the make of prednisolone that I have discovered will dissolve in a little water. Maybe some other sufferers have been given these recently but don’t realise they dissolve. They are bitter though.

Do you find it helps taking them that way?

I thought maybe they would get into my system quicker but I have no proof of that.

Yes. I can see that. Have you noticed any difference?

I’m only a month into pmr so still feeling my way and have only started to taper a few days ago so can’t really say. I’m not taking omeprazole as it really didn’t agree with me and I’ve had no stomach problems

I have been taking this brand for the last 2 months and had not been informed that they need to be dissolved!! Only after reading your post did I check the information and yes you are correct its says you can take them whole but recommend dissolving. Might try that way tomorrow too late for today!

It doesn't really matter - they dissolve pretty quickly in your stomach anyway, All it does by dissolving them first is speed the absorption up a bit, maybe by 20 mins,

I've been prescribed these before and have never been told that they dissolve. I doubt if my GP knows either.

The benefit of disolveable pred is fast absortion in the stomach and reducing the small risk of the pred sitting in the stomach too long increasing the possibilty of serious stomach problems.

Thats why its IMPORTANT when you take tablet pred to take it after a little food and to drink a glass of water to help it disolve safely in the stomach which is clearly stated on the packet insert.

If you do that you should not need disolveable pred.

Its also I understand a lot more expensive to the NHS in the UK anyway.

That’s incredible. I must have been very lucky to find a pharmacy with those in stock as they were not specifically asked for.

I wonder if there is an issue with other brands as I too received these in my last prescription, the first time in 3 years.

Well you're never too old to learn something! Can I ask does the Patient Information Leaflet say they are soluble? Usually soluble or dispersible tablets (technically there is a difference) have that written on the box eg " Dispersible aspirin" and that description forms part of the product licence. A lot of tablets will start to disperse in water but are not truly soluble, ie dissolve to make a clear solution. I'm intrigued (rtd Pharmacist).

No mention on the box of them being dispersible

I disperse them in a little water as they are very bitter, so there is less to swallow, but follow that up with a whole glass of water.

Not what you're looking for?
