Hospital Discharge

I have just been discharged from hospital, having been treated for pneumonia. While I was in hospital, the doctor changed my Pred dose from 4.5mg - which I’d been on for several months and which I’ve taken at night - to 10mg for a week, to be taken in the morning. I must admit that I really was ill and for several days quite happily took whatever tablets were given to me. However, it dawned on me a couple of days ago that I’ve been taking the Pred at the same time as Pantoprazole - and so far with no problems.. My question is, is it advisable to take these two medications at the same time? I can’t find any reference to it in the FAQ but just feel I’ve read that it’s not a good idea. I can always return to my evening dose now but, as I felt I was sleeping better - mind you, the amount of medication I was on, it’s not surprising! - I’m considering sticking to the morning Pred dose.

Any advice gratefully received

Jan

Glad to hear you are on the mend now.

I couldn't find any interactions specific to these two medications, but they do say that Pantoprazole can in some cases increase, in others decrease, the activity of other meds. Pred was not mentioned as a medication of concern.

Thank you. I’m just really tired and I didn’t want to mess up my meds. Got lots of new ones to merge into the existing ones!!

Yikes, I do not envy you. Maybe, once you're fully over the pneumonia, time to sit down with the pharmacist and make sure everything can do what it's supposed to? But until then, take life easy and get better!

It probably doesn't make much difference though normally they say to take PPIs on an empty stomach half an hour before a meal. Pred is better with food

Hope you are better soon

I’ve now got the equivalent of a spread sheet to organise all the new tablets!! As far as Pred and PPI is concerned, I take the PPI first thing in the morning, then have Greek yoghurt with fruit, then take Pred. Luckily, doctor was very clued up on PMR and immediately doubled my dose. Told me to stay there for a week, then to go back to just above my previous dose. Have to admit, my care has been really good.

I would stick to the morning dose of Pred. It’s what my Endocrinologist advises me to do. If I recall, I took the PPI before the Pred. Heron’s advice about discussing the optimal way to take your meds with the pharmacist is a good idea.

I am so sorry that you have been so ill. I hope you go from strength to strength now. Are you intending to return to at least 5 mgs in a week or so. I think I would as per the sick day rules. Forgive me if I have misunderstood, I am not really firing on both engines myself. 🌺

I was really lucky that the A&E doctor understood PMR and immediately doubled my dose and told me to stay there for a week, then to return to just above my previous dose. It was just as well he had that knowledge because I was an energy admission and at that time was so ill, I was not even aware of my surroundings!!

Just noticed the typo - energy should have read emergency. The state I was in definitely didn’t include energy!!

Hi I also have just been discharged from hospital with pneumonia (PCP)

The meds were all given to me at the same time in the morning in a little container I had to separate the Omeprazole from the rest and take it then leave an hour before taking the others .

Same thing with me! I’m now taking PPR first thing, then yoghurt and fruit for breakfast then Pred. I really need a spread sheet for it all!!

This is good to keep saved then you can cross check any Medication against another. This should lead you to Prednisolone & then you can simply add the other Medication.

Hope you are feeling much better 💐

~Sending healing hugs your way - nasty thing that "pneumonia". From memory it takes a good 6 weeks for a lung/s to heal after this assault. Take special care in the days ahead~

Thank you so much 🙏. I don’t have much choice but to rest because I also have COPD so my poor old lungs are really feeling really battered!!
