Leaking Macula due to steroids?

Hi, diagnosed with PMR/GCA May 2019. Started on 40mg of pred. Now on 5mg. Went for eye examination yesterday and told macula leaking fluid into the eye. I know this can be a problem for people with diabetes which I don’t have. The optician said steroids can cause it. I have an urgent referral to the eye hospital. Has anybody else been told they have this and it is due to steroids?

Rather than steroids causing macular oedema it’s my understanding that this condition can be treated with them. I’ll try to find something to support my thinking but I’m sure others will be along to comment (I’m out early this morning).

I hope your eye appointment comes soon. If there’s anything to be learned from PMR/GCA it’s patience 😗. Wishing you well.

I have macular oedema which I am told is due to my type 2 diabete which strangely has been in remission for over 5 years and I was diagnosed with macular oedema 4 years ago. I am convinced the sugar spikes I get from prednisolone causes it. I have it treated by injections ( anti VEGF) although my last injection was a steroid injection.

Good luck with it

some of the eye doctors tell me off for not controlling my diabetes. I keep saying that my hba1c is 36 so I am not in diabetic level and it is the steroids

Sounds like the problem I had a few years ago, cannot remember if it started after i developed pmr and took steroids. Noticed watery vision, immediately contacted my optician who found that this was due to a macula hole whereby liquid leaked. She contacted hospital who deemed it not an emergency. I was told no cure other than hospital treatment but I immediately started taking Boots Opti-Health (Lutein etc) capsules. Hospital appt confirmed problem and booked me in. Had to postpone as was having bunion op whereby had to keep foot raised whereby eye op needed ‘posturing’ (head down to keep in fluid replacement) !! Meanwhile continued with Lutein. At next optician appt I mentioned I had MH to which I was told “not any more you don’t “ and I still don’t, in fact optician complimented on good eye health…… worth a try 🤞🤞
