Pain in right hip and leg

I have been getting pain & tingling in my right hip and leg since June 2022. I though it was sciatica at first but when I went to my GP she sent me for an MRI which showed Spinal Stenosis. No amount of pain killers help & still waiting for physio. GPS has suggested Amiltripline, has anyone used this for pain? I take 1.5mg Pred started Pmr in 2016.

Amitriptyline is specifically used for nerve pain as is gabapentin.

Thanks for your reply. I may give it a try but am 5 days into Covid at the moment and & a bit worried about starting a new medication . Should I wait until I am better?

I think I would - mixing things makes it difficult to decide what effects are due to what.

I take 10mg of amitriptyline for sciatica and it does help and helps with sleep. I haven’t had any side effects

That is good to know, I have found nothing works when I get sciatica apart from physio which helps a tiny bit.

Amitriptyline .......Can you buy that over the counter or is it prescription only?

Prescription only.

I had amitriptyline for sciatica, before PMR. Unfortunately it had an overwhelming effect on me, similar to pred, eg extreme insomnia. But for other people it works well: you can't know until you try it. At least you do not have to reduce slowly, as with pred, if it does not suit.

I take Amitriptyline for peripheral neuropathy. I find it is very good. 💐

I take amitryptylline, first diagnosed to help my fibromyalgia. I have had sciatica forv4 months now, & it doesn’t help that, nor the trochanteric bursitis, which was diagnosed last week. But they are on differing sides so nowhere comfy when I lie down! I find you need to take it early evening, about 7pm to have the effect of relaxing the muscles & helping me to get off to sleep at 10.30-ish! Did you try searching on amitryptylline? This subject comes up quite often & I think you will find more info & ‘chat’ there. I’ve been advised I need to double my dose, but then I’m groggy (groggier!) in the morning, so settling for 1 and a half tablets right now. Not sure it helps my pain, tbh, but I’m on tramadol, & soon to transfer to morphine, probably, as tramadol not helping enough (I have other medical issues as well)! Hope this helps, S x

Thank you to every body who replied re. Amiltripline. I will give it a try when I am over this Covid. These things are sent to try us they say. We all know how difficult pain is to deal with don't we?

I too have spinal issues and have found physio very helpful. Do the exercises as prescribed for you! The white Tiger Balm which you can get without a prescription may help you as mayTENS. Good luck!

I had spinal stenosis and amitrypiline didn’t work for me only surgery tried almost everything physio all manner of painkillers. Struggled to get a proper diagnosis. Told numerous time age and wear and tear. Thankfully after a last resort mri scan got the treatment needed. The Nurosurgeon told me surgery needed or wheelchair bound. Happy to say successful hope you get the treatment needed. I add that I was 71 years old.
