Holiday dilemma

We’re about to fly back to Scotland from Gran Canaria in a few hours. It’s been a lovely week but unfortunately during last night and this morning I’ve been violently sick and had bouts of diarrhoea.

Two questions for this knowledgeable forum. Do I just not take my prednisolone today and hope things calm down tomorrow? Also I know I should hydrate but every time I drink some water I’m sick again. Can’t even look at food. Any suggestions please. I’m pretty nervous about our flight home today.

Hi

Not what you want to hear but you really shouldn’t be flying today if you have been I’ll overnight.

I had the same sort of thing before Christmas ended up in casualty for 24 hours on a drip . Had sever dehydration . High temperature and pulse rate plus infection . Was unable to even stand up on my own .

It’s difficult l know but you don’t want to be ill on the plane . Usually these things are only 24 hours so you may feel better later.

Safe trip home

Xxx

Thinking back to the time I was that ill on holiday, there was no way I'd have been fit to fly for a good 48 hours after it started - probably a little longer.

You really should seek medical advice. If they advise against flying, hopefully your travel insurance will cover you for medical costs and rebooking your flight.

Have you tried taking your water 'one sip at a time' every few minutes.

Thanks for good advice Purpleazalia and Rose54. The TUI rep has been very helpful. A doctor is coming shortly and we’ve been in touch with insurance company to cancel flight today. Hope doctor can advise about the prednisone problem. I’m tapering slowly at the moment and am on 7mg although non taken today as yet.

Glad to hear it. I'm sure the Dr will have a solution for not being able to take your steroids and your fluids.

Please let us know how you get on - feel better soon x

try sucking on chipped ice if you can’t drink water. Also found that something like Sprite usually helps.

Hope you feel better very soon.

I wouldn’t fly in that state not least because low cabin pressure can cause an upset in even a happy gut. Also, if you have something like Norovirus I suspect the crew would take a very dim view given just how contagious it is. If you did take a turn for the worse midair it could cause all sorts of trouble. Also, in view of your missed Pred as well, I’d be seeking a doctor’s advice asap and depending on your other symptoms they may give you an antibiotic plus or minus something to slow things down. Get on to your travel insurance provider for advice before you do too much off your own back apart from seeing the doctor.

Bit late now - but the ideal would be an injection of steroid to carry you over the illness since actually you need MORE steroid not less when ill as there is a need for more steroid to support recovery.

All things considered - if it were me I'd want a few more days in GC and the warmth to recover properly!

Thanks to you all for good advice as always.I spent the afternoon at a clinic, had bloods taken,X-ray and lots of fluids put back into me. Will get back onto the prednisolone tomorrow and our flights have been rearranged for Thursday. So as PMR pro advises another couple of sunshine days will definitely aid recovery.

I'm very impressed by the treatment you have received in GC, all in one place. I suspect that it would have been a different matter in the UK.

Yes I totally agree. However it was all done privately so hoping insurance company pays it all back once we’re home.

I find immodium is great for diarrhea (on a temporary basis).
