I hope you all have improved health for 2023 and less pain.
We went for a short walk yesterday and have plans to repeat if the weather holds off.
I am rarely able to walk far nowadays and am frustrated by it since 2 years ago I was walking 2+k 5 days per week. Bloody PMR.
So, my question.
Why do my feet hurt if I have been off them, had my legs raised, for 30 mins or so? They're very painful and I limp but just for a few seconds (normally) and then they're not so bad. Somedays are worse than others and I wouldn't contemplate a walk on those days.
Here we are yesterday in the middle of the fields after a walk through the forest. 2km round trip approximately.
I don’t know if this applies to you but I also have foot pain when I walk. Sometimes it does feel better after a while and some days it’s terrible. I went to a podiatrist. X-rays showed severe arthritis in both feet. In fact the bone below my big toe has deteriorated in both feet. I said that I found it odd that both feet have the same problem. He told me it was not unusual especially for athletes. Now I’m no where near an athlete, never was, but I was extremely active before GCA and walking and hiking were always my main form of exercising. I also was a flight attendant for 35 years and was on my feet probably more than the average person.
Anyway, I’m just trying to live with it along with a lot of other things lately Haha.
Foot surgeon told me they can go in and scrape some of the arthritis but I said no thank you. There’s only a 50% chance it will work
Don’t know if this helps you but this was my experience
Sounds like you've had a lot of wear and tear on your feet. Me, not so active throughout my life but do have arthritis in big toes. I have shoe inserts from my podologue (podiatrist).
Thanks for your reply. it's frustrating that it's so inconsistent, some days much worse than others.
That is the effect I had for the first 5 years of PMR I think - it hurt to stand and weight bear and after the first few agonising minutes it improved. It went with pred and had=s never come back. I suspect tendinitis ...
Lovely video Idasmum 😊 Happy new year to you (and hubby) too x
Re feet, mine are very painful and misshapen. Orthopaedic surgeon was willing to operate (including amputation of one toe 😳) but like you, I decided that the likelihood of success wasn’t worth the trouble. Time will tell….I may have to give in at some point.
Think for me it was nothing to do with PMR, it’s arthritis that’s the problem.
Meanwhile, I potter on, mostly indoors, in the garden, or on walks measured in yards rather than miles or kilometres …..
OMG! Surgery sounds so drastic. I am pleased you can potter.
I am pretty sure Arthritis is the issue for me. My podiatrist talked about it last time I was there and I have 5 year old Xray somewhere showing it in my big toe.
I wish I could just allow myself to be whatever but feel compelled to get some exercise to deal with my weight.`Part of me wants to say, "Am I old enough now to stop worrying?" and part of me listens to medical advice.
It seems very bizarre reading your post as before I was put on 60mg pred (suspected GCA) I was exactly the same as you.
I couldn’t work out what was wrong with my feet. I too struggled to walk after sitting and limped the first few steps . Very painful. Since being on high steroids it has completely gone??
There are quite a few on the forums with similar sore feet stories - mostly we say it felt like our shoes had insoles made of a mix of pebbles, sharp gravel and broken glass! And pred sorted it out ...
I remember the conversations. My feet felt like that back in 2016. I remember my GP friend quietly saying, "You need to walk" and thinking how much it hurts. Pred must have sorted it out. Now this is different. Just pain across my instep as I put my foot down. It's brief mostly.
Could I suggest it could be a type of cramp through lack of enough hydration. I find that if I don’t keep up my hydration and do some walking I get cramp pains which are not in the expected places for cramp. Try to keep really well hydrated and see if that helps.
I drink more (mostly water) than pretty much anyone I know, and yet I still have to take magnesium for cramp. If I don’t drink enough, the cramp's back-in force 🤷♀️
