hi

I am currently undergoing investigations for PMR/GCA. I have an elevated CRP at 140 and am currently having a PET/CT scan tomorrow to get a definitive diagnosis .

Does anyone have any advice as to whether OMEGA3

supplements or any other supplements have worked for them . I have have symptoms for about 4 months now.

hi,

Welcome to this forum, this link contains information of what to expect if you have GCA/PMR and does mention a little about Omega3 in relation to inflammation- but no supplement replaces steroids in your treatment.

I have been taking Omega 3 since the Spring and haven't noticed it being helpful.

My rheumatologist is a supporter of omega-3 but I can't take them as there are contraindications. Not specifically in PMR/GCA though. Nothing replaces pred but for other supplements there may be things that help YOU but they are very individual. And you do have to think about the cost benefit analysis - the costs soon mount up. The benefits may not.

Personally I try and include any supplements in food rather than lining the coffers of supplement suppliers unless recommended by my doctor. They reckon 96% of supplements purchased are unnecessary! I suppose a lot of them act as a placebo so in fact perhaps they do help.

In fact oily fish, rich in Omega 3, is recommended as important if you have PMR.

As you can tell I am somewhat cynical of some these so called cures!!

I do take small quantities of Omega 3, but only because I do not eat fish, and more for other reasons. I have not noticed any effect on the PMR, but then, I was not expecting to and have not looked for it. I also eat walnuts every day which are quite good for Omega3; however, non-marine Omega 3 is not supposed to be effective as marine Omega 3.
