Hi, when I was first going through tests for PMR and GCA. The Rheumatologist I saw asked if I had ever had leukaemia as my white cells were so high. I hadnāt. And that was prior to going on Prednisolone. 15 years later, they are still high. My current Rheumatologist says every time I have a blood test that it shows high white cells, and that itās normal for me. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Depends on which white cells are up because the white cell count number is made up of more than one white cell type. Also, Pred causes a rise in one of them, Neutrophils, so depending on your dose, that can make the total white cell count seem higher than it is normally. Some docs seem to forget this. My Neutrophil dose was no different and went down with the dose. But, the doctor needs to decide if there might be another cause and if other types of white cell have increased, whether thatās worth investigating.
Yesā¦mine was caused by predā¦doctor had advised me to increase due to a flare, & other new medical issues. But no action needed in my case, & all other tests satisfactory. Hope for the same for you! What dose are you on at the moment, please?
Yes, just read your other post this morning & replied. Have you asked the doctor if this could be responsible for the high white cells? Thatās a pretty hefty dose, Ronzy, I was only on 10mg when my white cells were elevated!!
It is a sign of inflammation and infection - and pred can also raise it a bit, especially high doses for the first while. It is all the other things that become important though. If they asked for a full blood count and differential at the start they'd not have to do as much in the way of repeats!
