Prednisolone/Prednisone- steroids- depends on where you live in the world.

What illness do you have?

Hi I have a hiatus hernia which causes acid reflux and Oesophageal Spasms, the spasms have only come on this week and I was relieved to see it was common for Hiatus hernia which I’ve had for a few years, I didn’t know it was an ailment until I was reading these blogs, I’ve always just drank cold water to calm it down successfully.Otherwise healthy except for diagnosis of osteoporosis after breaking my elbow. X

Okay thanks -my late hubby had a hiatus hernia as well.

Just wondered at the question as you are on this forum which is for PMR and GCA -both of which are treated by steroids.

Not being rude, but why are you on this forum if you have osteoporosis? Would have thought one of the others on bone health would be more appropriate.

But glad if we help…

I’m not on this forum for osteoporosis, I just mentioned it.I’m on it for Hiatus Hernia and acid reflux, and I noticed Pred and wondered what it was for.

I am on a bone health forum thanks.sorry to have troubled you.

Don’t apologise-just wondered that’s all..

You’re very welcome - there are lots on here with osteoporosis as well -and AA to prevent osteoporosis as Pred (steroids) can affect bone health

It was quiet a shock to be diagnosed and I take AA and vitamin tablets, I don’t like taken anything else and because that word kept popping up everywhere , I wondered what it stood for, thanks for your help.x

Very simply, Pred is short for Prednisolone... a steroid medication used to reduce inflammation arising in the body as a result of our PMR/GCA. Others with more knowledge may wish to add further details.

I think it evolved because we have members from the U.K. and US and the Pred prefix is universal for the drugs Prednisalone and Prednisone. Sorry for the confusion.

We tend to call it Pred for short as basically everyone is taking it as it’s the Treatment for PMR/GCA

The other reason is ~ in the U.K. we have Prednisolone & in the USA they have Prednisone; the difference is the way it’s metabolised by the body. Other Countries use one or the other

I’ve written a list of Abbreviations we use on the Forum - it might be helpful if you ass it to Your Saved Posts for easy reference.

Kind Regards

Something I think might have been overlooked for this lady. Many of us suffer from acid reflux as a result of using the "pred". That is how WE go onto that conversation, and that's probably why you found us.😀
