Burning pain: Hi I have burning pain on my thighs... - PMRGCAuk
Burning pain
Even today with well-controlled PMR, I know when my dose has gone a bit low when I start to have trouble when standing. I don't know if I'd call it burning, but I sometimes have to pause when I stand up, and the first couple of steps can be difficult. I can see how some might experience a burning sensation. As I said, when that happens I know I need to take a tad more pred for a while.
Iv been told off on here for upping so not sure what to do. Shall I go up .5 or 1 for couple days please.
Not sure we "tell people off".. just advise. But it's not always PMR, can be other issues, so have you done anything in last few days that could cause it? Is it a usual sign for you it's your PMR playing up?
No, I think it's that, as DorsetLady said, there are other things which can cause problems. Last night I planned to take my pred at 2 am. I woke up, but I had an uneasy feeling that when I thought I was popping a half 5 mg tablet I actually didn't. I turned on the light and looked and didn't see it so shrugged it off, thinking I must have swallowed it. But I didn't have my glasses on. I woke up feeling quite a lot of common aches, which is unusual these days. And there was my half tablet on the floor, brazen as you please! I threw away the floor tablet and took 3 mg, which I've been doing every few days as 2.5 doesn't seem to be quite enough after a few days, and about three hours later feeling better. This is straightforward pred withdrawal. Had I felt that way this morning having actually taken the tablet, I'd guess that maybe my dose wasn't quite enough, or that I'd done something yesterday to affect the muscles. It is a balancing act. Because you have that burning sensation for just a very short time after you stand up, whenever you stand up and start to walk, it sounded somewhat like my early PMR symptoms, less like over use, but that's for you to determine.
On the other hand, yesterday I did go across to our market and bought a bag of apples, plus had a heavy library book in my backpack. Because it was snowing and I knew I wouldn't go out again once I went back indoors I walked around for about half an hour first, carrying the weight. That could also have contributed to pain in my neck and shoulders. Because the pain is easing since I took pred, in about the expected time frame, I've had an unintended experiment to find out what the cause of pain may be. I'm thinking it was missing my dose, not the exercise, because I'm used to carrying a bit of weight when I shop, although not usually for so long, and I could shift the weight from hand to hand, which you can't if you have both hands full, which made it easier.
Sorry, I did go on a bit, didn't I?
Actually that makes a lot of senses I’m still not good at judging too much actiywbrn I use to do so much. I can’t believe walking round Morrisons and popping into my sons is lik a blooming days work now. I’m my own worse enemy. I cooked finder Sunday bending uo up and down to oven. It’s so hard to make sense of it all and back X-ray yesterday I struggle to accept this is for now the new me. Also bern a bit stressed with back pain and dental appointments coming up.
We have to learn that PMR is life changing and it has to be treated with kid gloves.
Ah well, you do have to remember you have to pace yourself. Think about how you might behave if you had a broken leg or a bad cold or the flu. You would be "taking it easy". Not to say you shouldn't keep active, but in a much more selective way than you are used to. Have a walk, but don't clean your house, that kind of thing. It does get better - eventually!
And I have found for years that getting together with a friend for a short time leaves me feeling like I did a hard day's work. Other day I couldn't figure out why I was so exhausted, then I remembered I'd stopped to talk to someone when I was out for my walk, mostly because of his cute dogs. Turned out he knew my husband (who wasn't with us at the time I should make clear), so that led the conversation down a long winding path, and I stood for a good half hour before we moved off in our separate directions. That alone, standing and talking, was enough to wipe me out for hours!
No not my usual sign
Yes, do as DL suggests. It's always better not to take extra pred unless you are sure. It makes tapering more difficult down the road. The dreaded "yo-yo" effect!
Thanks
I had something similar once due to shortening of the psoas muscles due to spending so long sitting and lying with my knees bent as I went through 6 months of chemo. They never got stretched so hated it when I stood up. I had to do exercises to lengthen them again. There are other causes like pressure on nerves other than the good old sciatic nerves that can cause this. So if it persists it might be an idea to be checked over by someone, preferably a musculoskeletal specialist or osteopath/chiropractor or a good physio.
ThT makes sense as Iv had chemo and currently have been on diazepam for trapped sciatica nerve. I’m so worn down! Had X-ray yesterday waiting results.
Yes, I get it. Thought it was sciatica but had it 8 weeks, so booked a doctors appointment.
Was it siatica
Appointment is next Tuesday. Lot of deep pelvic pain & trouble on right in sacro iliac region on left.
Blimey to technical for me lolGood luck
I’ve not learned these terms from reading this forum, there’s so much info on here, & so easy to search for it, too. It doesn’t mean much, it’s the back of the hip, rather than the front, I believe. I’ve had sciatica each winter for past 3 years, but have some extra symptoms this year. I thought I read burning pain is associated with that, may be something to ask doctor/physio when you get the results of your back x-Ray. I did have physio for my sciatica last winter. If you’re like me, & find it hard to reduce pred, I’d check if it’s connected with your back issue first rather than increase pred…increasing pred doesn’t help my back problems at all (had to go back to 5mg from 3mg in November, & had sciatica then!)
Hi, after my PMR subsided I developed burning pain in thighs going down the leg toward the foot. I was having difficulty walking and getting up from a chair. But sleeping was the worst problem. Tossed and turned all night rotating sides. Diagnosed with Lumber 4 and 5 disc age-related problems. Started taking Gabapentin (2 at night) and the pain subsided.
