PMR and vaccination

The onset of PMR that I have suffered is undoubtedly linked to the administration of the Covid booster at the same time as the Influenza vaccine. Exploration of the research data reveals that there is a low incidence of adverse auto immune reaction; sufficiently low to discount. Now however one learns that GPs are advising that the two vaccinations should always be staggered. I have identified a number of others who have suffered the same misfortune.....from fit as a flea to lousy steroid dependence and am interested to know how many others there may be out there. I am not suggesting for a moment that there should be any reluctance over accepting the Covid vaccines but rather that others should be forewarned.

Yes, there are a few here who have flares of their autoimmune condition or joined the forum since they were vaccinated. The trouble is with anything that puts a rocket under the immune system, it can cause it to go awry, just like other things that people report prior to diagnosis. The adjuvants in the vaccine are meant to do it and for some it is too much. As for splitting doses, I do wonder what the ideal gap is. I’ve heard doctors give their opinions about spacing vaccines over the years when patients expressed concern about proximity and it seemed quite arbitrary. There are cases where vaccines must be at least 3 months apart but that’s because they interfere with each other. Instinctively it feels like double the adjuvants, double the trouble. After each Covid vaccine it has taken me about 3 months for things to settle, so I don’t think a wait of 1 to a few weeks, which is typically what is suggested would have helped me. The trouble is with all this, there is so much invested in all this, public health emergency, political and financial that nobody on the ground seems interested in really trying very hard to look into it. Certainly I’ve found the neurological symptoms I’ve had after all three of mine are quickly waved away without a second thought, like a reflex.

I don't think you can necessarily blame having the jabs the same day. People have developed PMR after the Covid jab, the flu jab, the shingles jab adminstered alone - and after having Covid, the flu, shingles or a wide variety of other life events/illnesses. There is no single cause of PMR but it is more a build up of stresses on the immune system until eventually something is the straw that breaks the camel's back and it triggers the immune system to go haywire, unable to recognise the body as self and it turns on the body tissues and attacks them, leading to inflammation and symptoms. That final straw can be one of a wide range of things - including illness, stress, excessive physical exertion, Or a vaccine. If it hadn't been the vaccine, it could have been anything else that you met soon after.

I'm not dissing your experience - but Moderna 1 did nothing, Moderna 2 caused a flare, Pfizer for No 3 did nothing - although I have reduced my pred dose by 7mg in the months since. I was lucky - since the jabs are done in 2 totally different places, I could choose when.

I developed PMR suspiciously soon after having my first Covid vaccine. I didn't have the flu jab so it cannot be due to having them both at the same time.

I can echo this.

Until those research people find the actual cause it can be anything that triggers it off. In my mind it is like looking for a small object you have dropped in sand.

This survey was started in August 2008 cause, Patients from the UK & USA have collaborated to devise and launch a Global Online Survey, which will provide data, free of charge, to Patients, Researchers and Medics. It could be the biggest online survey

(quantisurve.com/cgi-bin/pmr...

of its kind ever and may help reveal the cause(s) of two debilitating, life changing illnesses.

My Mother had both PMR & GCA, 21 years later, GCA arrived for me.

The year before GCA came along, I had a major operation to replace a snapped tendon so I could walk again, this meant nearly 4 months when I could not put a foot the the floor. Then I had to get backing to walking slowly.

So I could say Genetic or Stress.

The link above looks dead. Is there a current link to this study?

Thanks?

quantisurve.com/cgi-bin/pmr... - Just tried it and still working.

quantisurve.com/pmr/reports... this is the link to the ongoing summary.

Both have worked for me. Hope you are successful this time.

My rheumatologist advised me not to have the 3rd primary vax as it would probably cause a flare, but I weighed up the risks of having and not having it and did it anyway. I have had a bit of a flare but as they say correlation doesn't imply causation, it could be just winter or the excesses of Christmas or just the volatile nature of PMR. Interesting that she advised me though, the docs must know something we don't

I assume you had the non-live flu jab?? Just a thought.

Only children are given the live version - never adults

As others have said , many people link the onset of their autoimmune or autoinflammatory condition to beginning soon after a vaccine , not just Covid ones.

These types of chronic health issue are often caused by any sort of trigger , or Stress ( either a good or bad , short or long term, activity you have taken part in that was a jump to the body and it found it hard to cope with ).

A vaccine , therefore, for some people may have been the final trigger , but it is just as likely that some other stress related activity could have brought on the condition at some point too.

It is usually a combination of genetics , which can make us more at risk of developing certain illnesses, and living a normal life that eventually cause a chronic health condition , like GCA/PMR.

I'm sorry your condition seems to have been triggered by your vaccination experience , but know that this forum and it's members can give you lots of advice and support to deal with it as you go along , so do post any questions or requests for support whenever you need it. Take care , Bee

The government Yellow Card scheme lists lots of adverse effects to the Covid vaccines, so you are not alone. Unfortunately this information has to be searched for, and should really be presented to people prior to vaccination so that an informed choice can be made. Some countries (eg Japan) are obliged to provide warnings of side effects like Myocarditis which is now affecting many young people

The potential adverse effects of the Covid vaccines have been amply demonstrated to be far less of a risk than that of catching Covid itself.

Here’s my tuppence worth……Mild flare of RA Stills Disease since first AZ jab, no worse with second AZ or third Pfizer although flare is still present.

I have chosen not to have the flu jab as well so far at 59 and not CEV or on steroids etc
