I may be asking the obvious here: I have managed to keep my weight down by eating a lot fewer refined carbs and virtually no refined sugar. But my blood sugar remains high. I have never been overweight.
If I eat a few small bits of eg, Christmas pudding, is it likely that my liver will go Whoopee! and flood my blood with sugar?
Just don't want to put on pounds every day.

How high is your BS? Truthfully, a small amount of Christmas Pudding is not the end of the world. It’s all the nibbles that up the Carbs! We deserve a Treat - it is Christmas 🎅🏻
No - the blood sugar level from what you eat and the sugar level due to pred triggering the liver to release sugar are separate. What you are doing by cutting dietary carbs is reducing the contribution to average BS you CAN control - nothing you can do about the pred-related part. That then helps reduce the overall BS level over time and also the amount of insulin released - less dietary carbs means less insulin is required for them and there is also less glucose floating around later when the pred-effect also triggers insulin which would take that excess glucose and store it as fat.
Don't go mad and you won't gain a lot - though I find I retain fluid when I eat more carbs. And water weighs too!
The answer may lie in in the words “a lot fewer”. For some of us, we have to have next to none. Also, a lot fewer of how many to start with? It may still be significant. Are you testing your own blood sugar or having a blood test done by the doc? If you are testing your own, it may be down to timing. As PMRPro says, the liver is affected by the Pred all on its own and is induced to make glucose. If you hit that spike or worse, add to that spike with your diet the reading might be scary. If it’s the ‘average’ test HbA1c that’s high, you may well need to be cutting down the heigh and frequency of your blood sugar spikes with diet more stringently. As for Christmas, I wouldn’t say take off your gloves completely because people here have reported feeling rubbish if they go mad with treats. I certainly do.
Yes, just the HBA1c. Even more stringently? Oh, golly. But ok. Just not sure about porridge. On the one hand oats are good for inflammation, we are told, and they're not refined carbs, but carbs they are!
I had to cut out all cereals, pasta, rice, potato and maize, wholemeal or not. I’d say do a food diary of everything you eat and see where the carbs go in. You’re not going for zero but you may be totting up quite a bit on the quiet; it’s amazing how easy it is. If there really isn’t much going in and the blood sugar is still quite up then you may be one of those who do need medication. It’s finding a balance for you people vary on this.
There’s everyday, consistent lifestyle diet, and special occasion treats. As long as you don’t backslide into partaking in ongoing treats/carbs, you can enjoy some holiday delights.
For me it will be perogies and whipped shortbread. I also ensure that I make veg dishes and low carb options.
Yes they are. Our favourite filling is cheese and potato. Boil then fry in butter, sometimes with bacon, and top with sour cream. A Ukrainian tradition.
If you are talking about your A1C and type 2 diabetes, that can be hereditary and regardless of what you eat you'll have the problem. You still need to fight it, but it may require meds eventually. Good luck.
Low carbs are the way to go. Sugar is bad is so many ways, that's why it's so delicious LOL Sugar is akin to heroin.
