Getting a bit lost with all the posts! Someone wrote in recently about flares after eating sugar so thought it worth adding that I had 2 very bad days twice recently after eating quite a lot of refined sugar (once at Easter!). I am not diabetic and still have a relaxed attitude e.g. to a smidgeon of marmalade on toast, but this seemed more than coincidence.

We do have a lot of posts per day and it can be confusing but if you click on the magnifying glass icon at top right you can enter what subject you are looking for. No doubt other forum members who have experienced the sugar reaction will answer soon.
I remember someone having a very sugary weekend and was feeling really ill the next week.

I recall reading an article (can't find it now) where it said that the effectiveness of steroids is reduced on a high sugar diet. Does anyone have more info on this? I get headachy and listless after a sugar binge, but to be honest I was like that before GCA. But if there is a possible link between sugar and flares, then I'm sure it would motivate us to modify our diets.
There are one or two out there...just woken (yaay sleep)...I may have it on phone... Iwill have my sugar free breakfast first 😇
Try this one for starters...

Thanks for that. I suppose avoiding foods that cause inflammation, including sugar, is the same as saying that steroids work better on a low sugar diet? The article I read wasn't about GCA/PMR, but another auto immune disease.
You don’t have to be diabetic to feel rubbish after high sugar foods. I’ve always had it, especially as a child but didn’t know it then. After trips to grandma’s I’d feel really ill for a few hours. The body really doesn’t like a high blood sugar because it has negative effects on various tissues. One of them amongst many is stopping one of the body’s vasodilator chemicals so blood vessels can end up shutting down. I can imagine if you have a blood supply problem already that’s not good. Insulin clears it out of the blood stream into cells and will pump out like mad to drop it so not only do you feel a bit toxified you can get a knee jerk low blood sugar level too.
I have gotten off most sugars and all gluten and wheat. I feel awful, nausea and stomach cramping if I have either. The least bad sugar is real unpasteurized honey, next is true maple syrup, both in very small quantities. Sugar is in fruit and alcohol so those are off menus too. Pineapple and papaya seem ok. I still manage carbs and dairy ( I avoid cow dairy when I can); sheep’s yoghurt seems ok. Sugar is really a kind of poison. I lost about five kilos but have stabilized my weight now with dairy. If you can find raw milk at an organic farm with grass fed cows that could work well to help your gut start to restore better function, but go easy and carefully.
