Sore eyes

Does anyone know about dry itchy sore eyes and significant "bags" under them. Upper lids are okay. Particularly bad at night. The soreness is enough to prevent sleep. Eyes feel sunken. No eye drops (can't list them all) have had any beneficial effect. Cold compress (wrapped ice cube) helps a little.

The questions: Is this anything connected to PMR? Or connected to pred (down to 4mg/day after a bit more than 2 years)?

Thanks for advice.

I could go shopping with my bags these days!!

Have you considered dry eyes? Blepharitis? Have you tried warming masks? And scrupulous eye hygiene?

It doesn't have to be as bad as most of the pictures you see online.

There was a post on here recently about dry eyes…I have started using Hycosan which seems to be helping and someone also suggested wiping your eyes with Baby Shampoo on a cotton pad…sounds unlikely but really helped.

You mean cleaning the eyelash line with shampoo - not your eyes themselves! Glad you found it helped though,

Lol…yes Although I read many years ago that washing your eyelashes when you shampoo your hair was good for them and do do that anyway.

Don't you get the shampoo in your eyes? I find it bad enough rinsing it out of my hair in the shower!

Amazingly no not sure why

We can get an eyelash mite, too small to see, especially if auto immune, causes itching dry eyes and I had read that washing eye lids in shampoo when showering is good, them someone on here put up that they were told to wipe eyes with baby shampoo.I think the best thing is Tea tree oil but have been a bit wary to try that….hence the shampoo treatment.

Hi bresbo, i see you have had a lot of eyes drops, but have you tried HYLO- FORTE ? I had a problem with my eyes an this was amazing ,it helped with in a few days ! As for the bags the more you fiddle the more they swell, best to try something gentle and leave them to settle. Best of luck Viv🌷

Hello, anecdotally there does seem to be an increase in allergy symptoms in people as they pass through the low doses. I was the same and had problems with skin, gut and hay fever. My optician prescribed thick ointment for night and watery drops by day as just watery drops didn’t do the trick. It all resolved eventually. Also worth considering Sjögren’s syndrome, espec if your mouth gets dry for no good reason. rheumatology.org/I-Am-A/Pat...

Thanks for the Sjogrens tip. That sounds spot on because of the connection to some forms of lymphoma.

Optician says it is PMR - I use Thealoz Duo - four times a day - as many drops as you like

I have very dry eye and Blepharitis (plus the bags) before GCA and PMR. I use prescribed additive free Gel Tears x 4 daily, have a gel eye mask (optician sold me) to microwave - which is very soothing - but. as well, GP suggested using warm water on a cotton bud, as often as you want, to clean the eyelash line is very soothing. I get hard to treat eye infections so hygiene is key.

Just bathe eyes in Micellar water - recommended to me by an optician several years ago and it works wonderfully and is very soothing.

I use Eyebright from Liz Earle website. Pour on cotton wool pads and lay on eyelids for 10 minutes. Can also leave this solution in the fridge for a more cooling effect. This is plant based, the flower eyebright has been used to help sore eyes for hundreds of years. Hope this helps.

as to the under eye bags…i too was amazed at how much my under eyes had “ bagged out” during this PMR JOURNEY….one year now…started at 20 mg now down to 6 mg. then about 3 weeks ago i had a tremendously long pee in the middle of the night. like nothing i have had in years ( i’m a tinkler). the next morning ,and it has continued since, i noted a great decrease in this under eye baggage. so i am putting the bags down to water retention which for some reason decreased once i hit 6 mg. nothing else in my regimen had changed.

i do use drops for the dryness morning and night. just a simple over the counter drop…thera tears.
