Colonostomy while on predisolone.

Have taken the laxative the day before the procedure and am feeling quite sick. Anybody had this?

You mean a colonoscopy? I think it isn't uncommon to feel a bit nauseous - it is a lot of stuff to drink after all. And very bloating.

They say I must take pred after the procedure… usually take it first thing.. so hope that will be ok.

Should be. Some doctors are happy about you taking it as normal with a small amount of water - depends what time the procedure is I suppose. An -oscopy is not too bad - definitely preferable to an -ostomy!Good luck

Dear Bedwell,

I have had a couple of these, over the years, but don't recall a 'Problem'.... other than a HECK of a lot of erm... well quite!

I believe I had, to start, the Cleansing the afternoon/ night before. Since the Procedure was in the morning I simply 'Put Off', my Medications, until ADTER the Colonoscopy. As I recall my Doctors were 'Happy' for me to 'do' this. (Not Ideal, I know).

If you have any other 'Worries' then, I would Suggest, 'Taking' to your Own Doctors/ Consultants.

Good Luck

I had that procedure a few years ago and, yes, it's not unusual to feel nauseous. I also had a endoscopy at the same time, but was given a mild sedative. It was over before I knew it. Good luck.

Yes, last year. It’s a bit uncomfortable but bearable , and you can ask to be slightly sedated to calm you down. I had 3 but only because of the nastiness in colon for which I had an ileostomy. It doesn’t take long and you get see a birds eye view of your colon. Don’t worry too much, you’ll be fine.

I got very sick with the laxative they now give you - I can’t remember it’s name - however, my colonoscopy had to be postponed. As I’d had a colonoscopy previously using the older laxative, picolax, to no ill effect, the doctor prescribed it and there were no problems with the next one. Hope that helps and good luck.

Hi. I too have had the ‘drink’ and sympathise. It was fine the first day, but by the second, it was pretty horrid and hard going. The actual colonoscopy was fine and took my morning pred as normal. All went well regarding pmr, and all fine with the investigation. Good luck.

The Moviprep was vile, and I was instructed to take both doses last evening. Terrible night.. bum area raw and very painful. Also legs achey and generally wobbly. So what’s new? Picture of new baby helps to put it in perspective. 2.pm procedure. Can’t wait to have it over . Thanks for support .

I sympathise, had one 4 weeks ago. The nurses were fabulous who look after you throughout procedure. Cannot say the same of the Practitioner with the camera, she had had a charisma bypass! I was offered a sedative and gas and air.Felt better after a good nights sleep at home but it was a couple of days before I felt myself. They gave me my report straight away to go home with, I also had a follow up CT scan as routine 2 weeks later.

Will be thinking of you.

Margaret.

Had one couple of months ago. Doc offered me sedative or gas for the procedure but as I was hesitant suggested we try without and stop if I was uncomfortable and then administer one. He was great and hardly felt a thing. Congratulations on the great grandchild....

ME! In fact, I stopped having Colonoscopies due to the "prep" making me so sick. I vomit and get horribly ill during the prep and I have no idea why. My hubby never has an issue with the prep. In fact, no one else I know of gets sick as I do during the prep. Anyway, I was given the "ok" to just do the Fecal Card every year as opposed to a colonoscopy every 10 years. I tried the colonoscopy route twice and both times was sick a full week so I just can't handle it.

Bedwell profile image
Bedwell in reply topatrickd

That’s interesting. I’m feeling very wobbly at the moment and found the prep quite brutal somehow.! Crossing fingers for this afternoon.

patrickd profile image
patrickd in reply toBedwell

I don't know why I react the way I do to the prepping but it's very interesting you mentioned Pred. because that could very well be why. I mean you are cleansing out your system so maybe this causes you to "wash out" all the meds in your system thus causing your body to feel that weakness etc from Prednisolone being out of your body. That makes sense to me I guess. ANYWAY, I wish you all the best! The worse part is over for you...I mean the actual colonoscopy (in my option that is) is a breeze. You don't feel a thing!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply topatrickd

Once the pred is into the blood stream it is there in the tissues and that can't be reversed - it would only be a problem if you took your pred at the same time as the prep and it just washed through the GI tract whithout being absorbed. Plain pred only takes about an hour to get from the stomach into the bloodstream

I was sick with Moviprep and couldn’t swallow it. I stopped having colonoscopies too, but had a CT scan instead. My partner didn’t like it, but had no problem taking it. It obviously affects people in different ways or they are braver than me!

There's a lot in just a couple of letters. My son then 20 was admitted with torchon of the testicles. He'd suffered for several years and managed to untwist them himself. This time no joy. Luckily I was with him when the doc arrived with the consent form. She said, very confidently, you'll be consenting to a bi-lateral orchiectomy. I said I sincerely hope not you'll be sued for a lot of money and have one very very angry young man, and his mother. She retreated through the curtains and returned with a form for an orchiopexy! Got to check whatever they want you to sign. Good luck.

Ouch!!!!!!! Hope she remembered that one! But what if it hadn't been a clued-up patient/parent? A surgeon in Austria was fined recently for amputating the wrong leg - took her 2 days to realise!

Sophiestree profile image
Sophiestree in reply toPMRpro

My cousin who was a staff nurse in theatre had exactly the same - they were wheeling the patient in to surgery for amputation and she checked the chart and they had put the wrong leg down 😱

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSophiestree

My husband's story on that one is a goody: he developed a method of measuring skin oxygen levels to assess if a BK cut would heal to reduce the trial and error nibble approach. He turned up to see a patient pre-op and the surgeon said "So, we're taking off the right leg tomorrow ..." Patient - "No, you're not ..." The surgeon assumed the patient had changed their mind and started the persuasion talk. Patient interrupted while throwing back the bedcover: "You'll have a job - you took it off last year ..."

Eek 😬 I’m being referred for endoscopy and colonoscopy. I’m feeling nauseous enough as it is without additional help. Hope it goes on.

My wife was deathly ill from the colonoscopy stuff. It was almost equivalent to the 2 times she had food poisoning. She didn't even go to the bathroom after drinking the entire jug and she even had to cancel the colonoscopy and does not want to try again, even with the other product. She had the one you mix in the great big jug. I have had them both with that one and the other one where you mix a small envelope in a glass of water and then drink lots of water.

She was told that sometimes a person will have this bad reaction and to try the other stuff but there is no way that she will. It took me years to talk her into getting a colonoscopy and I was so glad when she finally relented. Now I feel awful that she won't try again. I had colon cancer and had my rectum removed, an Ileostomy for a year, Ileosptomy reversal, chemotherapy. I would hate to see her or anyone else go through all this stuff. I have permanent neuropathy in my hands and feet from the chemo that only gets worse with time. Several others in my family have also had colon cancer.

I should point out that my wife is not on Pred or anything, just a heartburn med for reflux so it would appear that she is just a person who has a bad reaction to that particular laxative.

I had a really bad time before my colonoscopy with that terrible laxative. However the actual colonoscopy could not be faulted . I went to Chase Farm hospital.. was treated with great care and attention. Had my own cubicle with loo attached. Hardly felt the needle fir mild sedation.. quite unaware of the procedure which was all clear! Thank you nhs

A tip for anyone preparing for a colonoscopy-- get some Vaseline cream (or other product to protect skin from too much water exposure e.g. wet diapers/nappies UK?) and apply liberally before the bowel movements.

Bedwell profile image
Bedwell in reply toAdoptMeow

Absolutely! Take note. I was in agony not having done that! And I use coconut oil for all sorts of things. That would be good too.
