omeprazole and prednisolone timing optimization?

hello!

going to write an update in a bit, but... short question is easy.

I'm trying to do the best for my digestive tract that I can. I'm having not as much luck finding factual and sometimes even anecdotal information out about when to take the myriad of medicine i must over the course of the day.

for those who are taking a proton pump inhibiting medicine and corticoids, when do you take each during the day? and why?

thank ye for the help!

Once you have figured out the optimum time for everything do invest in a pill storage container that divides into times of day ie morning, afternoon, evening and night. I have a different colour one for each day of the week. I fill them in advance and would be lost without it. They stand on their sides in a box that came with them. I think I got them at the usual place ( Amazon). I also have a smaller, similar item enclosed in a leather pouch that I take away with me.

If you list what you have to take each day, one of our clever members, with that kind of organised brain will be happy to suggest an order in which to take them, I am sure.

From nhs - and in patient leaflet -

“How to take omeprazole

It's usual to take omeprazole once a day, first thing in the morning. It does not upset the stomach, so you can take it with or without food.

If you take omeprazole twice a day, take 1 dose in the morning and 1 dose in the evening.”

Depending on when you take Pred (say after/with breakfast) take PPI before breakfast.

I took mine at same time - no issues….but then fortunately I have a very robust system medication-wise….realise not everyone is as lucky.

Might be useful if you listed meds - then we can ‘advise’ on all.

All I can say is I’ve been on Omeprazole or Esomeprazole since the early ‘90s for GERD starting with 20mg 2x/d and as years rolled by was increased to 40mg 2x/d. I don’t know what the half-life is but I’m betting I have a fairly constant amount in my system.

Maybe, like PMRPro mentioned that’s why my Rheumy indicated I could take my Pred right along with it. Ideally it’s 20min before a meal (which is what I’d been doing before PMR), especially one that is known to contain foods known to promote acid reflux. I don’t think Prednisone is known for causing acid reflux but can result in gastrointestinal issues. Don’t think the issue is a drug interaction between Pred and the PPI, but having sufficient Omeprazole present to reduce the risk of the GI side effect.

Who on here is taking what amounts to 80mg Omeprazole per day to account for taking Pred? My guess is no-one and that’s why for me it doesn’t matter.

Hi DorsetLady, I was an unlucky one and omeprazole along with lansoprazole upsets my digestive system.. Can't take either and have to take pred with food 😩

Did you have problems with your stomach or are they a 'just in case'.

Ideally, you should take it first thing - half an hour before any of your other Meds - direct from My Pharmacist - but in the real world it isn’t so easy……

I've got 18 different prescriptions and three recommended but not prescribed... when I get to a desk top, I'll take a screen shot of the spread sheet, because my fingers would melt into the phone by the time I was done! heh.I was diagnosed ibs, but then it was bile salt malabsorption, but also undifferentiated connective tissue. part of my update involves doubling down on aspirin and even less exercise so I have been severely urged to start the bone density medicine. I'm having some odd gut reactions since starting the corticoids and really just want to do as well as I can even tho I don't quite know what's going on yet.

As per MrsN's info, I take mine at least 30 mins before my Pred, early in the morning.

Speak to your community pharamcist if you are really concerned. However, a PPI should be taken shortly before the first meal of the day. They don't really have any relationship to the pred - you take that at the time that works best for you but is usually set at early morning so as little inflammation as possible has been able to develop after the shedding of the inflammatory substances at about 4-4.30am.

I'm not sure if I'm concerned... I feel like I can't read all the experiences on here and glean the great information fast enough, in this tumble down a hill into pmr. I'm trying to work on the ounce of prevention basis: if I can get it the most right now, less fixing will be called for later.

do you mean the prednisolone time is set fir early mornings? I will look through the faqs again to hunt more information on this, this is the kind of thing I seek. I want to know ALL the diurnal! ha.

thank you!

My GP said to take the omeprazole before the pred, so I literally take it just after breakfast and immediately before the pred. Maybe I should take it before breakfast then, but I've not had any digestive issues. First thing, before breakfast I take my apixaban, amlodipine and atorvastatin. Then after a coffee I take all my supplements except calcium. I take 1 calcium after lunch and then at bedtime apixaban and bisoprolol and the second calcium. Am I getting this right?

I've just read a conversation you had elsetime about shedding and cortisol release that is just what I needed. thank you!

Being lazy, I wait no more than 15 mins between the two. No trouble so far after 22 months. To some extent it’s probably dose dependant on Pred. You can get EC Pred if you ask your doctor very nicely. He prescribes 2.5mg EC so I can mix with normal Pred to almost any dose equal or greater than 2.5mg.

i love when there is conversation.... i don't get out of the house enough. i wish there was a good coffee klatch nearby. i'm, i think, putting a pic up of what regular prescriptions i'm on at the moment.

i'm going to go quick because the computer is being clamored for. i'll come back on a bit later.

i've also been told to take 1000 vitamin c to activate the levothyroxin, iron to help with anemia. and i can't think what else. at least one other thing.
