Try this - bowl of proper porridge plus one whole orange every morning for breakfast.

This was advice to my cousin who had a small stroke and the stroke clinic said to her, exactly what I have just written to you. The cholesterol came down within six months to 4.7.

The orange must be a whole one, not just the juice.

Jinasc will give the porridge a try xx

Does the orange interact with the porridge in some way? Or will the porridge do on its own?

Harrywogan profile image

Mmm not sure x

I don't know why, but it did have to be a whole orange.

Whole as in not juiced - to keep the fibre which is the secret.

One of these days I might just remember what you have told me before. You jogged this disfunctional memory today...

I was on statins long before GCA - about 14 years or so and took them all through my Pred days (so best part of 20 years in total) ….no issues, although it did take 3 attempts to find brand that suited initially.

Came off them at the end of my GCA journey - different GP did suggest I went back on them about 18 months ago, but didn’t agree with me this time around - so not now.

Not it’s not fair, but being on steroids probably won’t help either!

My sister and husband brought theirs down through diet but mine didn't budge. The doctor said it familial as my Mum had it. Weird my sisters don't.

I don't take a statin despite raised cholesterol - it made me too ill in terms of PMR-type symptoms. That is with the approval of my cardiologist.

I had terrible muscle pain on statins. I’ve tried 3 different ones and eventually they all caused problems. I take nothing now. Trying to control with diet but haven’t been too successful

Hi Harry, you will get conflicting answers here. I've been on a low dose 5mg of Rosuvastatin for many years now, long before PMR decided to join my party. However it took me three goes with different ones to find one which didn't play merry hell with my joints.

Hi. I’m on 10 mg statins because post cancer treatment can raise cholesterol. No adverse reactions so far. Sometimes I feel like the old lady who swallowed the spider. Take one medication to cure or manage one condition and something else pops up which needs more medication which then causes something else snd so it goes. Still as long as these conditions can be controlled…. however my pill box is running out of space

Yes, for many years, familial cholesterol problems, no improvement with diet or weight loss. No problems, side effects, &no change when PMR started two years ago. They brought my cholesterol down quickly.

I'm on atorvastatin. I initially blamed it for the joint and muscle pain and came off it, but no effect. Then I was diagnosed with PMR and now I'm back on it again, but a lower dose plus 30mg pred. No problems, yet!

Because of recent heart problems and high cholesterol I was prescribed statins but after a long discussion with our practice pharmacist decided not to take them- I simply cannot bear the thought of any more muscle pain which can and often is a side effect!!!! Check what your HDL and LDL levels are in your combined cholesterol level... that can make a difference to your decision!

Hi. Yes had to start statins eventually earlier this year as diet etc didn’t do the job. Started on atorvastatin but one of my liver enzymes went a little over normal limit so now on pravastatin. Been slowly increasing dose. No problems at all. Been on steroids four years and over 20mg Pred when started. Good luck 😀

Hi Kafkaontheshore & Harrywogan Same with me - l’m on 20mg Atorvastatin & haven’t noticed anything except a drop in my Cholesterol Levels - getting levels repeated with next MTX Bloods

I was so against statins but my GP made a compelling case so with being diagnosed with Angina & on Meds for that it made sense to try them……

Hi Harry, been on atorvastin for many years and increased dose from 10 to 20 about 3 years ago. Started pred 15mgs may 2020 and down to 1/1.5 this month. No probs I thought but now got heart chamber fluttering picked up by pacemaker check up. Still awaiting to hear my next move from GP. Cant really say that statins and pred have been the problem.Should have added I have porridge with semi skimmed milk 6 days out of 7 a week but with a few blueberries and a banana with a topping of greek yoghurt with cultures.

Few more options for porridge toppings -

bhf.org.uk/informationsuppo...

- many of which will help with other issue, as may flax seeds…and more fluids (not alcohol that dehydrates, nice as it is!)…so for each glass of white, a glass of water!

But having said that, for me grapes in their natural state work wonders….and figs!
