Oat milk

I’ve been drinking oat milk as it seems to help with carb cravings but have now been told that it’s super bad for blood sugar levels. Having googled it there seem to be two schools of thought so I really don’t know if it’s ok or not.

Any thoughts please?

I looked into oat milk for my family because of dairy intolerance. It is relatively high in carbohydrate, though homemade is less refined but too much hassle for us. So it’s a question of how much you drink; it is clear on the label what you’re getting. The thing about carbs is trying to ingest foods where the carbohydrate is not readily available to be turned into glucose. For Pred taking it really has to be very unavailable so even wholemeal anything was a no go for me whereas for a standard healthy diet, it is seen as ok. You’re probably better off having something high fat like plain coconut yoghurt and a few berries. It was one of my staples. I also had a lot of cooked veg and vinaigrette for snacks because I craved taste.

Thanks for that Snazzy. What I hadn’t realised before was that the processing turned the starches into maltose! In my daftness I had assumed it was a bit like the water from my soaked oats only nicer, duh!🤯

all I know about oat milk is daughter used for a while then developed huge allergy to it. So watch for that!

Have been confused about this too.

More or less gave up dairy years ago (helped a lot with bronchiectasis), I progressed through soya milk (horrible taste) to almond (bad for the environment) to oat (poss bad for me) to pea (which I really like). Just waiting to hear that this too is "bad". Where to from here?

Any comments gratefully received!

Pea!! Never heard of that before. Where do you get that from? Agree about the soya and almond!

Goodness! It comes from Sainsbury’s and Tesco. Will give it a try.

Wow - didn’t know about pea ‘milk’! Just looked it up on Tesco website- interesting reading … it’s environmentally so good! Will give it a try! Alpro has recently come up with ‘My Cuppa’ soya ‘milk’ which I find lovely in my breakfast brew! 😄

My Cuppa might be worth a taste, thankyou

I think you’d like it. My family and friends think it’s ‘normal milk’! 🤣

is a good article summarising all the options. There is certainly a fair bit of sugar in oat milk - even without the added sugar which some have. I used up some left by my vegan daughter recently and even though it was no added sugar I found it very sweet. But I'm sticking to my coo milk - from cows that live up mountains and are entirely fed on grass or hay. The calves stay with mum until they are weaned. That's enough to salve my conscience - they are an integral part of the local landscape and way of life.

Our cows are belted galloways and we only feed them grass. They suckle for 2-3 years and we hand reared a calf when mother rejected it so we will put it into calf next year and get milk from it . Looking forward to our own milk. It's the offspring of a cross with a friends limousin bull which we let graze on our holding.

Would love to do that, but difficult in SE22!

No, don't think we export that far ;)

That’s a useful article, thankyou. Are you near the top of Italy where the houses start to look like Austrian chalets and one imagines that cows will wear bells round their necks Heidi style? So many of the poor cows here spend their lives indoors it’s put me off the real stuff even when it’s so called organic.

I am - the second nearest large town is actually Innsbruck and until the end of WW1 the region was part of Austria. And the cows on the alm do wear bells ...

in reply toPMRpro

Lucky you! It’s so beautiful there! Can imagine you skipping around in your dirndl now 😀

No, no dirndl now. Had one when I lived in Bavaria though. Tracht here is rather more up-market and costs an arm and a leg!!!!

in reply toPMRpro

Haven’t heard that word since I was a child! Seem to remember they were quite fancy but it was a very long time ago!

We farm a little over 150 acres specializing in non-GMO heritage variety small grains. Amongst other things we grow oats (Avena Nuda or "naked oats"). I have a dairy allergy and drink exclusively oat milk (both made from our oats and commercially produced). It does have a higher sugar content than other non-dairy options, but to date (knock on wood), I have not had any problems with it blood-sugar wise or otherwise.

Again, your mileage may vary depending on many things.

BTW, adding in pea protein makes oat milk froth really well for specialty coffees (or tea lattes) if you're interested in that sort of thing.

in reply toChris_1236

I’m very ignorant about farming in the US. Always imagine it on a massive scale, all GM stuff but your smaller scale growing of heritage oats sounds grand. That’s really interesting that pea protein froths up oat milk, I wonder how that works? Some sort of chemical reaction I suppose. Think Ill give it a Google and see🙂

Oat milk alone froths better than other non-dairy milks. Adding pea protein increases the protein content which results in still better frothing.

Most high quality oat milk has pea protein added.

We also raise Turkey Red wheat. It's a bit of a challenge in our location: Eastern NC. However, it is a fantastic wheat to bake with.

I'll stop sounding like an advertisement now... 🤐

Is NC North Carolina? It’s great that you grow food for people to eat not just to feed cattle. I’d say you’re a pretty good advert and I’ve certainly learnt something so thankyou.😋

Yes! North Carolina. We're very near the I95/I40 junction.

On TV they always show the massive cattle lots and huge scale pig farming. It’s all too easy to think all farms are the same but as you and Chris have shown, they’re really not and I’m so pleased about that. Never been to the US, might get there one day!

Well it's a small world as they say.

About 30 min southeast of Raleigh. Charlotte is a few hours west of us. We occasionally deliver products to the Greenville, SC area. We also have a large stone mill in Asheville, NC that moves quite a bit of our grain.
