I know this doesn’t answer your question but I’m not sure if anyone can say anything that will apply to your unique situation. As to whether you benefit, it might well help but it might be worth just taking stock in order to be able to put across to the practitioner what the essence of your issues are so they can best help you. What I would do first is read all the advice for the last few weeks and think about what you took on board, what you didn’t and why. I think trying to work out what you are after, beyond the magic wand, might help. For example, the trouble is with multiple causes of pain, it can be tricky to work out what is causing what. If it’s PMR, no amount of hypnosis will help, only Pred will. Other Chronic pain that is intractable and not easy to cure, might benefit from hypnosis to change your attitude towards it. You have been advised to tell a GP about your mental health, pain and what seems like despair from this end. Have you done this?

Not sure it is hypnosis you need - psychological techniques may be better - CBT for example.

If you try hypnosis let us all know if it works or not.

The mind is powerful I’m hoping it gives me a better way of coping.

Why not see a counselor to discuss your concerns...and learn coping strategies?

Hi Uglow

Some 30+ years ago, when I had small children and worked full time, I had almost permanent headaches and tense, stressed shoulders. An osteopath taught me self hypnosis, which is similar to deep relaxation, and it worked a treat. Worth every penny, and no more regular trips to the osteopath! I still use it occasionally now.

However….I didn’t then have PMR or GCA, or any other chronic inflammatory illness that I know of. I don’t know whether it would work for the conditions we have that bring us to this site. On the other hand, taking action to do something positive can make you feel better in itself.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on 😊x

No, I’ve never had hypnosis, or considered it, sorry Im no help. Something often recommended for fibromyalgia is cognitive behavioural therapy (NOT for polymyalgia!) I have FM & was offered it by my GP & the Specialist. I didn’t do it, but you could look into it & ask your GP tomorrow if it could help you with your other medical conditions, perhaps. It’s something often offered & I think it’s free! None of these things are an instant success, or a cure, but I can see you need some help. Please ask your GP for help as I can see you’re not coping. I understand it’s tough with multiple problems, I have FM, PMR, inflammatory arthritis, sciatica & a benign tumour in my back. Just a suggestion, something I do...make a list of points to discuss before you see your doctor...it helps, & makes them answer all your questions. Otherwise I get home & realise I’d forgotten to ask one! Good luck tomorrow! S x

When I was in pain I was willing to try anything, I hadn’t been diagnosed with PMR back then. I tried CBT, acupuncture, a physiotherapist, an osteopath and hypnotherapy and I’m afraid none of them worked for me. I’m not saying they won’t work for you but hypnotherapy certainly didn’t. I’m assuming it’s the same as hypnosis. The only thing that did help, apart from the steroids when I was eventually prescribed them, was mindfulness and meditation. Try looking it up on Google. It helped with my stress and in turn helped to reduce my pain. If you can, try to get out in the fresh air, look at nature, if only to try and take your mind off it. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to focus on your pain, I also found talking to people I didn’t know would help too. I would talk to people whilst on walks, at the garden centre, anywhere! I hope this all doesn’t sound flippant, it certainly isn’t meant to be. I just hope it might help you even if it’s just a little bit.

I get it. But it’s not pmr pain that’s causing me the most issues. It’s dealing with allThings in my head

I understand now but the advice may still be helpful for mental health issues also.

You say you have pain. Is that from the PMR or something else? Are you wanting the hypnosis for pain at all or are you looking for something to relax you mentally?

Mentally mainly

I hope you find that the hypnotherapy helps you Uglow x

So nothing to do with the PMR pain in that case? It sounds like you need to talk to your GP and get referred for CBT Therapy perhaps.

Uglow, I believe that you would benefit from joining 'Mind'- a mental health charity just as Healthunlocked is a charity where you find support. Here is a link: go to the 'Help and Support section:

I like your approach and do the same, talking to others is DIY self help.

Hi, I qualified as an NLP Master Practitioner whilst in my Public Health role in an NHS Hospital. I only says this just to let you know, that I use the techniques which includes hypnotherapy, to help manage my mental health and pain as best I can. I have PMR and GCA and Fibromyalgia (must be over 14 years ago now). In addition to daily meditation and mindfulness techniques. I consider them tools in my toolbox.

Whatever you do and where ever you go, please do not make sure that the Therapist is qualified and belongs to an appropriate body with a code of conduct and complaints procedure. As sadly anyone in this country can call themself a Therapist and it was shown recently you can buy qualifications which look impressive but are nothing more than printed sheets of paper.

Sending healing for a brighter future for you and indeed us all. 🌹

It will definitely depend on the therapist I would say if it helps you will know after 2 or 3 sessions. If it doesn’t I wouldn’t carry on

Hypnosis helps some people. It can’t hurt. I found meditation very helpful, I did a mindfulness course that was pain focussed. I also had healing touch for anxiety and emotional trauma and that was very helpful. I hope you will find something that gives you relief. Best wishes on your journey

PS.. I agree with Mgmt1234 that working with someone qualified is very important. Some people working in these fields are not qualified to deal with issues that can arise in these modalities

Certainly worth a try. After a dreadful first birth I opted for hypnotism for my second baby. The hypnotist tested me to see if I could be hypnotised to feel no pain and I wasn’t one of those for whom it works. However, I had several sessions with him which framed my thinking positively and I was able to put myself into a state of deep relaxation, both of which affected my response to pain. I would recommend it. My second birth was a doddle ..😅

I bought a book entitled, 'The Psychoprophylactic Method of Childbirth' after the problematic birth of my firstborn and when I was expecting the second. It was straightforward, easy to understand and even had a chapter for fathers 🙂. It taught breathing techniques and relaxation. It was my 'bible' and by the time my third child was born it was practically in ribbons.

Our healing is not just through taking meds. It is equally important to pay attention to our mental and perhps even more importantly our emotional health. Being positive affects our cellular function (see Bruce Lipton and Candace Pert's ground breaking work). Working on stuck emotions, trauma, old pain and grief can release energy into the body helping allieviate blood/fluid stagnation which increases with age - hence also the importance of exercise. And conscious relaxation is paramount - it so helps with this flow. I don't know much about hypnosis but anything that can help release and ease the body is good - there have been some good suggestions.
