Hi,
Has anyone had root canal treatment? What was the outcome? I have read tooth can hurt after and turn black. A crown might be needed after six months.
So grateful for this site.

Hi, yes, I’ve had two this year, and at least two more in previous years. The procedure seems to have improved beyond measure, but I should say I have an excellent dentist. The outcome has been fine for me, and for one of the teeth I now have a crown.
That’s my experience. No pain and no turning black!
Good luck if you do need root canal treatment.

Hi They usually do a root canal filling to try to prevent a tooth turning black. I had one (two in the end) done when l fell & damaged a tooth, many moons ago. However, it did in fact discolour & l had to have a Crown fitted.
Good Luck

Thank you MrsNails. I am feeling more positive now. It is comforting to know that so far no bad eexperiences.
Why are they doing the root canal filling?
Fractured a tooth. That needs to come out. Dentist took xray and said tooth next to the fractured one has the start of an infection. He showed me the xray. Some showed grey, that is the infection. Said I need root canal treatment. I have no pain or anything to make me think an infection is starting. He is a very good dentist, but pound sighns flash before his eyes. ( I think)
Very Probably 💳 but if you’ve fractured a tooth there’s always that risk & hopefully the root canal will prevent it going discoloured. I didn’t go to the dentist all through Lockdown but l’ve been four times in the last four weeks starting with a routine Checkup to losing a different crown, the hygienist and now l’ve broken a tooth which has to be treated, filled & sculpted but at least it isn’t another crown 🙏🏼

Good Luck 🍀
Hi agai,No way do you want an infection! That was the cause of both my root canal treatments this year, and both times I needed antibiotics - in fact I was as good as begging for them. And yes, the infection showed a greyish colour.
Good luck, and try not to worry.

Is the greyish area in the gum? That would indicate infection. I had a tooth removed at one point, First there was a filling. Then, with the greyish patch and pain, the root canal and a lovely gold crown. Then continuing pain so a specialist started drilling down and discovered whole tooth was cracked. He packed it with some sort of antibiotic stuff and said I needed to go back to my dentist for an extraction. As it is in back, next to wisdom tooth, we just left the space. The tooth turned out to have only one root so upside down it looks like a fang - I kept it because of that! It was probably the easiest extraction possible because of its shape.
Hi Julie. I had a root canal in July 2020 and a crown in August 2020. I didn't have any pain at all, either during or after, but I did take a couple of paracetamol just in case. No problem with tooth turning black.
My treatment for two was just fine. My young dentist was aware of my condition and the fact that I was on Pred. He gave me anaesthetic without adrenaline for reasons I do not fully understand. I had two crowns fitted as part of this treatment. This was during my PMR days about 3/4 years ago. I remember thinking that either I had become very brave or really it wasn’t a bad procedure at all. I have never heard of teeth turning black…..ever.
At the risk of jinxing myself , I had a root canal over 30 years ago and no problems, still have the tooth. Good luck with it. Hope it goes ok.
All this talk of dentists has "happily" reminded me that I have an appointment on Monday. 😒😒
I had a root treatment a couple of years ago - I think I have a fancy ceramic inlay in that tooth. There were traces of a bacterial infection in it, he cleared it out and did the job - and so far it has been fine. Mind you - my dentist here in Italy is outstanding, really fell on our feet when recommended to him. All dentistry is private here unless you are on a low income but the work I've had done here has been excellent.
I was born 9 weeks early back in the day before NICUs were a thing etc. I am also a DES daughter and wonder if if that also had an affect on my teeth as I have been fighting to keep them well all my life. I had 3 root canals and crowns before my 16th birthday. In my 30’s I had one root canal redone (it wasn’t done deep enough - sub par work) and they went right through the porcelain crown and did a gold plug. They don’t do that anymore, but I have had many dental residents look at it in awe.
Anyway, I have lost count of whether I have 9 or 10 crown and how many root canals I have actually had. Some of the crowns were necessary over teeth that were repaired without a RC). I can tell you that they’re easy peezy now compared to what they were when I got my fort 3, forty years ago. I haven’t had any dental work other than cleanings in over 10 years. So at some point, I think we reached a detente.

Hi DRunnerchick, That must have been awful at such a young age. I can remember that as a child I was very scared of the dentist. We went to the school dentist. He put me off going for years after..
It must have paid off now for you as you havent had any problems for ten years. Hope it stays that way for you.
It seems that once the work is done and you get past certain issues (I was told I had nearly no enamel, which explained my sensitive teeth, and I had an excellent dentist in my early 20s who had to redo subpar work and did some innovative orthotontic work (since my teeth could never withstand braces) and voila! It seems like now my issues as an adult are more periodontal. Before the pandemic, I had a plan that entailed getting my teeth cleaned every 4-6 months, especially with all my AI mumbo jumbo and recurrent oral ulcers. Just part of my territory. I wish you well! Better to head it off at the pass.

I fell and broke a front tooth nearly twenty-five years ago. When the doctor did the root canal and repaired the damage I was left with a dead upper front tooth. In subsequent years the remaining blood supply in the tooth (they can't get it all out with the root canal) has caused the tooth to develop a slightly greyish cast, barely noticeable even to me. The dentist (not my regular dentist) commented on it but as it was going to cost a fortune to be bleached out and insurance won't cover cosmetic procedures I passed. If I were young and beautiful or a public figure it might be worth it. But whatever they did at the beginning certainly prevented a black tooth!
