Overdid it

Took the advice to have pred early morning, worked like a dream. 2 days pain free. Unfortunately because of the lack of pain, I returned to thinking I could put in a full day's graft. Oh dear, wrong again. Paying the price today. Exhausted. Pain in shoulders. Second covid jab tomorrow. Feeling a little apprehensive.

Easily done...but lesson is, don’t do it again! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Good luck with vaccine.

Thank you. Lesson learnt.

Hi, the unfortunate side effect of suddenly feeling so much better is to try n catch up on things you haven’t been able to do & then you realise all is not as good it appears! Have an easy day tomorrow after your jab & hope you feel better soon.

Going to rest after vaccine tomorrow, under advice from your good selves and orders from my wife. Didn't have any symptoms or even heard of PMR before first jab. Coincidence? not proven.I have a very physical job working with my son installing central heating . If I give up work, then he is going to be out of a job in the short term. Feel some form of obligation to keep going, but today has shown that current situation is not viable. Need a new plan.

Apart from flu, never been ill before, struggling and a little scared by it all.

Hi TrainyI missed your original Post (l’ve was busy on FAQ)

Firstly have you reported your response to the Vaccine by completing a ‘Yellow Card’ on line?

yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/

PMR is generally a Slow Burn Condition though it can present its symptoms suddenly, even what appears to be overnight but as already explained it can be a drip, drip situation until it overflows!

As you already realise you now need to consider a New Plan. Pacing is absolute key to improving the situation, which with working full time does not seem to an option.

Good Luck with your Vaccine today & do tell them about what’s occurred since your first jab.

Good Luck🍀

Hi, yes I did yellow card it online. That was a lot more involved than I had expected. I already knew that I would have to slow down at work, I'm 61 this year, I have just been too stubborn to admit it. A nap after work is not an altogether new thing.

Do you think the vaccine jab is what pushed PMR over the edge and to show up in Trainy ? I find it interesting.

MrsNails profile image

It can often be ‘The Final Straw’ you may be suffering from Stress or a Muscular Skeletal Issue then there is an additional Stressor such as Vaccine or a Bad Infection & Wham - PMR -Some people insist it came from nowhere until they sit down & look at their life & review what may have happened in the weeks leading up to it....

There have certainly been a few posts in the last weeks on here saying they’ve developed PMR & others saying they’ve experienced a worsening of symptoms following the Vaccine.

Now wether you’ll get a Medic to agree is debatable as they may say you were going to get it anyway & it’s just a co-incidence.....

Trainy profile image
Trainy in reply toMrsNails

Having read your post and given it some thought, I have had joint issues in the past, goes with my job, but because they were short term I'd almost forgotten about them. Vaccine has maybe just triggered what was going to happen anyway. If I'd had the flu jab, that could have caused it earlier.Who knows?

You need to take it steady now & look after yourself, the Good News is Guys appear to have a more straightforward time with PMR & recover well, so that is in your favour 🍀 Hope you can work something out to your Business.....

It seems that fate has intervened and a lost pension pot has surfaced, which, if it is genuine will allow me to clear all my debts, take a step back and work part time . Result!! Even if it isn't genuine, it has made me rethink what I do, which has needed doing for long enough.

MrsNails in reply toTrainy

Well it’s surprising how things work out & part time sounds like a plan....Good Luck 🍀

Good for you! I, too, had to re-evaluate my life with PMR and other maladies. I retired early, applied for Social Security and disability. After 2+ years, I received my disability benefits and can now “retire” somewhat more comfortably. Best of luck to you!

I got PMR straight after Covid . In fa t I didn’t even know I had had Covid . It was only when I did some blood tests after developing PMR symptoms that it emerged I had had the virus . That was back in March 2020

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toPeptink

It is possible - but it is probable that it could have happened with the flu or shingles jab too. Not so much it was the Covid jab but more that it was something that had a good poke at the immune system.

Hi ytJny,I, too, never had even heard of PMR until after my second shot! After

The first shot, my arm remained a hey for 3

Weeks, but it never occurred to me what was going to happen after my second! I ended up in the hospital for 3 days, while the drs tried to figure it out. I now go to a specialist and he is working with me on prednisone. I am currently able to manage my pain while on 8mg a day. Wish I could get off the meds, but understand it’s a process. Let me know how you do after your second shot. My guess is, your PMR will be worse...sorry to say.

I’d never heard of PMR until a few days after my flu vaccine when it hit me!!

From experience - I agree. It's spring cleaning time, isn't it? And house is now open for family visits after 15 months. I am now having several days rest in order to recover.

We have Spring Cleaning to do too but the Garden is our main occupation at the moment & far more therapeutic! Though we’ve woken up to rain this morning....It’s all about pacing though 🌺

Prepare for a duvet day, with everything to hand. Water, paracetamol, etc Really rest and don’t respond to the fake energy again. 🐉

Yes, sympathise with that, I’ve done exactly the same, only to find that pmr has a way of reminding you it’s still there. And it’s in charge, not you. But it’s not for ever, go carefully and have patience, that’s what I’ve learned over the past months. My exercise tolerance is slowly improving but I’m still diplomatic with the pmr dragon.

Morning Trainy, so glad the early morning Pred take was/is successful. Everyone else has already said what the next moves need to be.

But isn't it wonderful to awaken relatively pain free after the very early dose? It's been my saviour, but now you understand that you must hasten slowly. All the best for your second jab 🤞

I am interested that you say that you didn't have PMR until given the Covid vaccine. My doctor thinks I have it. Blood tests in a couple of days. Symptoms started 5 days after Astrazeneca injection 1.

DorsetLady profile image

As said on here in response to other questions about vaccines whether it be annual flu, shingles or COVID - it’s probably been the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

It may seem that PMR or GCA suddenly appears, but it’s usually because your immune system is already under stress, and one more occurrence ...like a vaccine, an accident or an operation when it becomes even more under pressure, it can’t handle it and boom!

I am new here. Thanks for this information. Is there a particular thread where this was discussed thoroughly?

My PMR began after my shingles vaccine 8 years ago.

There are bound to be - there are 25,000+ threads on the forum! But the search function on the forum is useless!!! Often it may be a reply from me in the middle of the post so very difficult to find. if there are any threads asking what causes PMR you might find them

This is what I wrote only an hour or so ago:

"...there is no single cause of PMR, it is most likely the culmination to a series of insults to the immune system over years and eventually one is too much and the immune system flips out. The insults can be due to trauma, illness, environmental and chemical things, life events and stress - with a dollop of genetics that make it more likely it will happen. It isn't a hereditary disorder though.

Yes, there have been some new diagnoses and flares after having had the jab - but the chances are that if the jab hadn't done it something else would have. Or some people would have experienced nothing with the jab - but having an accident, operation or extreme stress in a few months time might do it."

Some people say it happened after the flu jab or the shingles one - but many of us had never had a flu or shingles jab before PMR. I hadn't. Surgery is often blamed - I'd had no surgery for 10 years prior to PMR appearing. I had moved house in the previous year or two - but I'd had far harder moves prior to that. There is no single common history to be identified amongst patients.

I just googled "what causes polymyalgia rheumatica" and the top ten or so all said the same sort of thing as I did above, ranging from the NHS to versusarthritis. If you do that - ignore all the ads and claims that appear saying you can cure it by omitting "this" or not eating "these 5 things" or doing "this programme" - because someone here has probably tried them at some point. They are rubbish and just seeking to transfer cash from your account to theirs!!

I was wondering whether I caught Covid on the same day as being vaccinated. Surely that would be a major assault on the immune system? Lots of coughing in the long assessment queue at the vaccination centre. I was stuck in it for a long time. Problems started on day 5 which would fit. Stress however could be a strong factor for me.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSeacat30

Possible with the delta variant - it can cause symptoms in as little as 1 day apparently. You should have done an antigen test to see I suppose.

But yes - Covid does cause symptoms that are very similar to vasculitis and then there is Long Covid which in general also resembles several autoimmune conditions. And is also likely to trigger any disorder that is linked with viral infection effects.

I keep doing that. Never learn, but it is so wonderful to feel energetic. Like you, overdo it. Good luck with your covid shot.
