After having a camera inserted thru my nose to examine my throat I was told I had LPR. Was given Rabeprazole which I have now stopped due to side effects. Withdrawal was awful! Does anyone know what treatment there is for LPR - have eliminated loads from my diet!

LPR
Are you taking steroids?
Laryngopharyngeal reflux can also be treated using H2 antagonists if you can't tolerate PPIs (the -prazoles). Stopping a PPI needs to be done by tapering over at least weeks if not longer to reduce the risk of rebound acid production - were you not told that?
There is a section Treatment in this paper:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl....
and the first paragraph lists the non-drug treatments which are also important alongside medication.
When I told the doctor I was concerned about taking PPIs she told me just stop taking them and manage with Acidex. Symptoms were awful crushing pains in my chest and reflux. I am currently taking Acidex after every meal - not suppressing symptoms- have started using baking soda which offers some relief. Presumably there is no options other than PPIs or potentially developing Barretts or throat cancer. Not much of a choice!
As I said above - you can also use H2 antagonists, such as famotidine, which are a different group of drugs and have different side effects. It isn't just PPIs. Why are you concerned about taking PPIs? They have some downsides but they are pretty good at what they do for a lot of patients.
Long term use of PPI causes B12 deficiency- brittle bones - dementia, c- diff and stomach cancer - I’d rather avoid any of those.
And for some people long term not using a PPI results in oesophageal cancer if you develop Barretts oesophagus.
I know ! Damned if you do - damned if you don’t - it’s all very worrying It would be good to get a proper diagnosis as to what is causing it - rather just a look down your throat and say LPR given a leaflet to cut out a few foods. Some stuff I’ve read says too much acid - some says not enough acid !!!
Why not try slippery elm , it’s natural remedy/ product . I have used it over the years from time time with excellent results for anything from throat problems to gastro intestinal issues , seems to help most .
Thanks I’ll have a look for that
Hello Allot,Could you tell me which foods you are not taking?
I have had LPR for 10 years, but MISDIAGNOSED as COPD with some bronchiectasis!!!
I have also been taking a PPI for the LPR, but it does not help. The only reason I continue with it, is quite possibly coming off it just so and I had a rebound reaction, so restarted them again...
I have changed surgeries, in the hope that the GPs there will refer me to an ENT Consultant - as the GPs I have been with for over 20 years are refusing to refer me to anybody, because THEY do not know how to treat LPR (which I understand is very difficult to treat).
Thanks,
Marguerite
Dear Gaz227 - Could you let me know where to obtain SLIPERY ELMthe you mention? I am well fed up having endured LPR without any improvement now for 10 years having been misdiagnosed with bronchiectasis, as mentioned below. Is it best to request a referral to an ENT physician - or to a gastroenterologist?
Regards,
Marguerite
I get it from a place called the house of health in mere green Birmingham . I’m sure they would have a website , and I’m sure there will be other places around the Uk to get it mail order, but don’t get the tablets you want the powder , one or two teaspoons in a little milk stir and leave for 5 minutes , it’s a bit gluppy to drink . But if you can get past that it’s really good and natural . I take it twice a day for about a week sometimes 2 at most . When things calm down stop using it . I think it tastes a bit like walnuts .
I would strongly recommend you to read a book called "Dropping Acid" by Jamie A Kaufman it certainly helped me. I also used esomeprazole, gaviscon advanced and gargled with high PH mineral water. It was explained to me that your stomach is like a washing machine on fast spin which allows small splashes and the small ones are able to reach higher than normal acid reflux so it gets to the throat and causes silent reflux or LPR not usually heartburn. There are also quite a few Facebook groups with helpful information. Hope this may be of help to you.
