Disappointed

After feeling very pleased yesterday I was deflated today to hear that two people vaccinated against Covid-19 yesterday, had allergic reactions. As I have multiple allergies I was disappointed to hear a comment on BBC that people in my category might not be able to have the vaccine. Any thoughts anyone?

Apparently the two people out of thousands who received the vaccine on that same day had serious allergies. They were treated immediately and were fine soon after. Your GP may be able to advise you.

Well, I’m not particularly surprised by this . I have spent years giving vaccines and severe allergic reactions are not common but happen enough for us to never be without an adrenaline rescue pack when giving them. There will be some severe allergic reactions and a fair few lesser reactions I’m sure, as there always is, you just don’t hear about them but these are in the public eye because this is high profile and new. Both people were adrenaline pen carriers and it may be that multiple allergies may not be classed as the same as severe allergies; it needs to be clarified where the cut off point is. But yes, a few more cases above the expected rate of severe allergic reactions might make me twitch. You might be disappointed if you thought that safe meant no chance of anaphylaxis and now the doubt has been sown it’ll require some extra mending of trust bridges in the allergy prone. My father-in-law who is allergic to Brazil nuts, cats, grass pollen, fish and good humour has decided not to have it as a result of this report.

I should seek the advice of my own doctor, it appears to be very severe allergies that require an immediate injection to avoid going into shock. I read about it on my internet feed so it maybe subject to rumour.

I have had a severe reaction to penicillin - requiring hospitalisation -also to sulphonamides. So I guess I'll have to wait and see. The 15 min wait was applied last week when I had my flu jab which was free of latex ( another, though less severe, allergy). I do hope that there will be one we allergy sufferers can have as I'd thought I'd seen the gate opening on my confinement. Hope this doesn't give encouragement to the anti-vaxx brigades.

As an RN, I think if you tolerate flu vaccinations without any adverse issues, you will do fine with the COVID vaccine

I read it as a BBC report, but I suspect it is no worse than the usual expected vaccination reactions, just that we are hearing about it this time.

One of the things they said right from early on was that patients were to be monitored for 15 min post injection - not sure, but they probably exclude people on epipens from clinical trials. As Snazzy says multiple allergies and severe reactions aren't the same.

Yes, I do know that, but severe penicillin reaction has just been named (20 mins ago) . Oh well, I'll keep wearing the warning wristband and try to keep informed.

I'm sure they will avoid it until they have worked out which are likely to be problematic - there are other vaccines coming online and it is very unlikely that most of us will be in the queue before others are available. It is one of the strengths that there are so many coming on and there will be differences.

.I had zolendronic acid infusion for osteoprosis 3 months ago and had awfull side affects and still going through constipation one of the side affects so I'm pretty scared of having it again next year .but every one is different so I suppose it's just luck realy .get fed up with worrying about all the what ifs just have to accept it ☺

The flu jab (latex free) jab which I had on Friday seems to be fine but this is the first vaccination I've had for years as I had avoided flu until last February/March when I vowed I would have the jab this year. But, as I said, the 15 min reaction wait was given for this. But now severe penicillin reaction is seen as a bar to the Pfizer Covid vaccine I'll have to wait and see.

Really sorry to hear this will affect you. As others have said, other vaccines such as perhaps the Astra Zeneca one may suit you, As regards your flu jab, why do they keep using latex when it is known that quite a few people are allergic!

It's true what snazzy says. They both suffer from allergies and was aware of this but they are fine now. Just check beforehand. You'll be fine I'm sure. So many watching out for us at the moment.

Hi maria40 I am also worried about having the vaccine as I have experienced some fabulous reaction to things as diverse as Warfain and a steroid inject but it is the public striptess that worries me most as it would be as slike as my last one haha. But seriously for me for its weighing that against my fear of getting Covid19 and I have a wedding to go to next summer.

Hi Maria, l will be keeping a very close eye on this situation, l have a Son with Very Severe Allergies, who has IgE Antibodies off the scale, l went cold when l read about it yesterday.

Whilst the 2people who had the reactions yesterday were only a small percentage of the many vaccinated, they were fortunate to be in a hospital setting.

I don’t wish to be pedantic but they were ‘not fine’ soon after as others have said, they were making a ‘good recovery’. If you have ever seen someone have an Anaphylactic Reaction or worse still go into Anaphylaxis you’d know how long it takes to recover.....

Maria, If you have a look on the Anaphylaxis Website they will be the ones who will be monitoring it closely, I’ll add a link.

Thank you Angela. From experience I did know most of this but in the light of new circumstances it's good to have it refreshed in the mind. I've just been into Patient Access to make sure all my allergies are recorded.

Morning!! I’m interested in this thread too as I had an anaphylactic shock a few years ago to a contrast die used in MRI scans - and very recently, out of the blue had to call an ambulance out having suddenly had a reaction (severe hives) to penicillin for the first time ever in my life. I retired during lockdown - a bit of a strange time to be doing this - and sometimes wonder why I did, as I have been confined to barracks pretty much, as an extremely clinically vulnerable person.

I thought the vaccination would be the first step in setting me free(!) - so this latest news is really disappointing. ☹️

Yes, it really is disappointing. I remember when my penicillin allergy was diagnosed it was quite dramatic, I went to my doctor ( I was then living in Germany) with severe hives and difficulty breathing; I was about 2 minutes in the surgery and then rushed into an ambulance and spent a day and a night under observation in hospital. I had taken penicillin many - probably too many - times before this.We'll just have to hope that another vaccine without the side effects will come along soon. I'd been making plans for my liberation too so hope it won't be too long.

I’m allergic to 44 things, have been tested quite a few times in hospitals, & spent a week in isolation in hospital until they realised I’m allergic to penicillin! My fun allergies includes dust (but still have to clean the house), nettles (well, that rules out the cheese with the nettles wrapped round it,) um..should have seen the mess I was in when I fell off a shire horse into a patch of 6 foot nettles! Oh, cats fur, but not dogs! Fir trees one of my worse ones. Who knows? I read the news, too. Let’s wait & see. I have other underlying conditions too & looks like I’d still have to shield for some time even if I get the first one, so maybe numbers 2 & 3 will be available by then & suitable! The others are very different from this one, something will be suitable for ‘odd bods’! So many unknowns, try not to worry, relax for now, S x PS that’s the beauty of waiting a bit, they find out all the small issues & solve them!

They reacted to that particular vaccine, but don't know exactly what caused the reaction.As other vaccines become available there will be more options.

Individual choice really. Even with all my allergies, I shall still get it as soon as it is available. I'll bring my Epipen and make sure I'm monitored.I'm not worried, just waiting till we can get it here in the U.S.

Some are more traditional technologies but I doubt anyone besides the manufacturers know much detail about the components - not the sort of thing to be sharing with other companies! It may emerge when the results are submitted to the regulators (MHRA in the UK) for approval.
