Disappointed

My hopes were raised this morning when I got a call to go to a local health centre for Covid vaccination. While I was on the phone I mentioned my penicillin allergy and details were passed to the doctor on duty who said he would only advise it in a hospital setting and I should contact my GP. GP said he would have given it to me but he couldn't override another doctor's decision and that the practice is not sending patients to the hospital and in the circumstances I may have to wait for Astra Zeneca to come on line (the health centre was giving Pfizer). I tried calling the hospital to see if I could go independently but no luck there either.

So more weeks of hibernation -aka shielding.

That’s disappointing for you. I know I would have been annoyed. Hopefully the Astra Zeneca one will be available very soon - I think it’s meant to be

The Astra-Zeneca vaccine is being rolled out already so you shouldn't have to wait too long. And it isn't a get out of jail card - you will still have to shield until a week after the second jab.

My brother who lives in Bournemouth was also told no vaccine yet because past history with an analyphtic shock one which they could not identity the cause and he would be contacted at a later date.

Yesterday the my GP practice rang, offered vaccine, I reminded them about my analyphtic shock due to penicillin. The GP then called today and said he had checked with the NHRC papers and other guidelines and it was OK. I then asked him why my brother had been turned away by Bournemouth Hospital. He was puzzled and could not give me answer.

I then asked which vaccine was they offering, no it was the other one not Astra Zeneca. I then said would you let me know when AZ is available. The reply was, that it is entirely up to me.

Needless to say, it was not my usual GP who I will call in a couple of days.

It's very confusing isn't it. as doctors seem to differ about this. Perhaps some are just being hyper cautious.

Sorry to hear that Maria, I too am allergic to penicillin and can't take a live vaccine so very interesting. I hope the Oxford injection, will be the best choice.

I thought that none of these vaccines were live ?

They aren't. The nearest to live is the Oxford vaccine which has an adenovirus vector which can't cause infection in humans.

Well that's also good news then as my Doctors did not give me that news my RA Doctor just reminded me I can't have any, that is what I meant. Hard to be clear on the site sometimes.

I dont blame you for telling them , thats what worries me, do they ask enough about your health before giving the jab !

It is impossible or them to look at all the individuals records. Half of them are not even computerised yet.

We all know what we have had over the years, so when offered just tell them what you know. and your concerns.

They have put a 15 minute time for you to remain in the place you have had the injection as "belt and braces".

With PMR and other auto-immune things going on I want to be in a hospital setting when I have mine, just in case

I rather agree with you Tangocharlie. I was worried about having a histamine reaction. My doc has told me to take an antihistamine the night before and another one an hour before. That is apparently what he did in case of a reaction.
