Live Vaccines

I read somewhere that while suffering with PMR and on prednisone one should avoid live vaccines. I’m due for a pneumonia shot so wondering if it qualifies as a live vaccine.

The pheumococcal vaccine is not live as it is a killed organism vaccine. Confirmation of this is in the link below under the section on how it works.

Thank you for the quick response, much appreciated. I checked the link and all is good. I get my shot Monday so no worries now, thanks again.

I make it a practice to always ask the person giving the vaccine, as well as to confirm what the vaccine is for.

I do not assume that the person administering the vaccine has received proper instructions.

Thank you for that but my GP is administering the shot and he’s very up on PMR, so all is good.

I even remind the doctors. Anyone an make a mistake, especially when doing routine things.

I had my pneumonia jab last Thursday and like GOOD GRIEF I also ask a few questions and check they are aware of my meds and any possible interactions... just in case. Had my flu vaccination at GPs and practice nurse administered it. Pneumonia vaccination at local pharmacy (and had to pay for it as surgery couldn't get hold of their NHS vaccine and said it could be some time as in short supply!) The private vaccine is slightly different although does cover main strains plus several more. Neither caused me any problems or side effects other than a slightly sore arm for approximately 24hrs at point of injection.

Hi

I had vaccine 2 weeks ago and made sure it wasn't live before I went

One thing I will say be prepared for possibility of a very painful arm GP reports many having real problems for several days .

I was unable to put any presure on the injected arm or move it away from the body for about 12 hours .

So glad I have had it done so dont be put off by that

Thank you. Sorry to hear it was painful but well worth it.

My GP said to have shot which I did about a month ago with no problem, no pain. Had the pneumonia booster the same day.
