Low carb diet has increased uric acid level!

Hi All,

I have been on this merry-go-round journey since March. I am currently on 9mg prednisolone and have told to remain on that dose until I see the rheumatologist in September. Tapering like many of you has been not very straight forward but I have been doing lots of things to help my body adapt/cope with PMR. I walk 30 minutes twice a day and have started going to heated pool once a week. I have changed my diet from high fibre to low carb (plus 1/3 cup brown rice everyday) only to have my doctor tell me that I need to change it as my last blood test results showed high uric acid levels. This means I need to eat bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. I take prednisolone in the evenings so I can function in the mornings and at work and am worried about adding the carbs back in to my diet in regards to sugar levels, which were creeping up in the beginning of treatment, and weight gain. Has anyone else had high levels of uric acid reduce with change of diet alone?

Hello,

Certain foods do indeed have higher levels of purines than others but it isn't as easy as eating carbs like it’s a cure because obesity, high insulin levels can also contribute. Have a read of these. You’ll need strict portion control and high fibre though that still comes with low carb because of the high amount of veg you eat.

Thank you for your reply. I apologise for the delay in my response. Thank you for the articles. There was more info there than I could find searching the web. It was interesting to see that poor sleep can also increase levels.

Are you eating very large amounts of protein? Are you aiming for ketosis, i.e. eating a ketogenic diet which is more extreme than just low carb?

A diet recommended for patients with gout allows 4-6oz of any meat or fish per day - which is more than I eat!

I really don't see how eating bread, rice, pasta and potatoes will reduce your uric acid level - only cutting the high purine foods would do that. And the Mayo does say clearly that diet won't stop gout, just possibly reduce the number of attacks.

Thanks for your reply PMRpro. Sorry for the delay in responding. When I was looking at the diet for gout the only real difference in my diet is that I dropped those foods to reduce my carbs and they recommend eating them and fruit. I do eat about 200g meat a day but there are plenty of days where I eat no meat. I do not have gout but the doctor said that should make a difference in Uric Acid levels.
