Low carb cooking

DogAgilityObsessed profile image

SheffieldJane mentioned a low carb cookbook a few days ago and several people asked for more info. I can’t see a response so wondering if it got lost in the middle of everything else.

Since starting on the pred I haven’t eaten any biscuit or cake although I do still eat other carbs (mainly whole grain and certainly no sugar). We cook everything from scratch and I’m extremely fortunate my husband cooks as much as me. My weight and blood sugar has so far remained constant but I am very alive to the possibility I may need to give up the Saturday night pizzas!

It is on a site called Low CarbProgram, in the shop and entitled Low Carb Kickstarter. You can buy the products without subscribing to the program ( I haven’t).

Plenty of Low Carb websites out there on the interweb - you shouldn't have to subscribe or buy anything

The diet doctor site also has suggested meals and recipes that are free to source. Like many other sites ...

Hi, how are you doing? Still doing well on your taper?

Me? I haven’t started the taper yet. GP said 6 weeks at 15mg to start. So I’m doing that.

Oh sorry, I mixed you up with someone else!

Easily done I think. How is your taper going. I think I remember you were just starting. (But I may be wrong on that!)

I haven't started yet. I'm giving it another week. Still deciding in how to approach it and fretting a bit!

Give it two weeks and we can do it together!

I have been using mynetdiary which actually checks all the various nutrients in your diet, carbs, calcium, fat etc etc. Also your calories. The basic one is free. If you want to lose weight it has all sorts of charts etc and even checks your water intake and exercise if you want. I am very impressed.

I use (the free) MyFitnessPal for calculating calories on Fast Days (we’ve done the 5:2 diet for about 5 years and regular fasting has stopped us putting weight back on). The MyFitnessPal app will also calculate the carbs so I may start using it for that as well.

We also have over 200 food and cookery books, mainly vegetarian and vegan as we’ve been Veggie for about 35 years. A lot of the older books are carb heavy (pasta, rice and flour) but I think some of the more recent publications are better and more plant based. I have a few low/no carb ones too but always on the lookout for more!

It’s probably not a good idea to be so food obsessed while on steroids and feeling so hungry. (No wonder my old dog put on so much weight when he had to have steroids for a while.)

Can you do the fasting days when you're on steroids? What do you eat? I could never do that diet, I love food too much!

I used to do the 12- 8 thing and not eat till lunchtime, but now I have to have breakfast to take the pills! I seem to be eating so much yoghurt too, I'm getting worried!

Fasting doesn't mean NO food, it means LESS food on the fasting days. I have done 5:2 and 16:8 fasting while on pred - no problems.

Me too, and even a 3 day water only fast.

As PMRpro says it doesn’t mean no food. And I’m pleased to read that it’s still possible while on Pred. Before diagnosis I was starting to add in time restricted eating (circadian rhythm) but that is proving difficult with yogurt and pred early and husband’s (and mine tbh) propensity to eat in the evening. But I’m still getting everything in a 12 hour window most days (and a lot less on fast days).
