Doesn’t look low carb to me! White pasta and chips, and lots of sweeteners. Seems allied with Slimming World and I’ve always thought they’re carb heavy.
The latest dietary approach to pre-diabetes and diabetes is low good carb high good fat.
As long as you substitute pasta and rice for the vegetable alternative as the authors suggest it improves the carb numbers. Also I would use olive oil, butter and full fat yoghurt or cream cheeses instead of spray oil and half fat cheese. The food does look nice and will be made more satisfying by addition of good fats.
I just read the method - stops that pdq when I realise a) I will have to go shopping to buy a load of stuff and b) there are more than 3 ingredients ...
Like Soraya, I would strongly dispute they are low carb. One of the problems with Slimming World is that, while it does work for some, it also allows quite a high level of carbs. Carbs are carbs - and in the context of being on pred that makes a big difference. If you are looking for low carb recipes then there should be a major alarm bell ringing when they tell you to use low fat yoghurts as I found in one recipe. If I were to eat a low fat yog that would be half the carbs I can eat in a day and hope to lose weight.
It sounds boring - but you MUST know your carbs and avoid them. And I don't think this cookbook would do that somehow.
Oops! I have switched to Weight Watchers from Slimming World because of the high carb content of SW diet.
WW are very pro 0% Greek style unflavoured yoghurt and I've been eating tons of it! Is it full of sugars? I did lose 9lb on my first week, which was probably mostly fluids, and I religiously stuck to chicken, vegetables and fruit. I have always done well on high protein/good fat diets - and found them more sustainable than others.
Are there less sugars in full fat yoghurt?
All I am doing is scanning products for WW points at the moment!
No - Total Greek yog at least is just fat-free but I can't see the point, the fat versions are still low fat and more satisfying. It is the flavoured ones that have so much sugar in them but I think plain Greek yog will only have the higher sugar because of the percentages (if you get what I mean). I've never looked before! Have you tried Skyr?
The book and authors have been on radio and TV a lot recently as it has had incredible sales, the fastest selling non fiction book in history. From their photos it looks like they were both pretty overweight and they wanted to have easy, tasty recipes that did not make you feel you are dieting. I am not sure if they were necessarily going for particularly healthy foods, but foods chubby people enjoy.
It does get a bit monotonous especially if you have to go low salt too. I also have to be dairy free 🙄. Thank goodness oils are still ok and there are so many spices about. I couldn’t see the inside of this book, so can you tell me if they are going low carb or is it good recipes and you miss the carbs out?
Some look reasonable low carb in terms of one's shown online. But some obviously aren't as in the introduction they say you can substitute pasta with vegetable ones (presume like the edemame bean noodles I get) and rice with cauliflower rice.
I have so many side effects at the moment that I have t been able to fully research low carbs... but this book has given me masses of ideas and I can modify the recipies from the advice given here.
Oh dear. She didn't remove your pred? Was that at your gp surgery or Rheumy?
It sounds like she was pitching for a dmard. I hope your usual Dr ok. You have enough to deal with at the moment. Ignore the rude and inappropriate comment. 🌻
Report/Complain about her. How rude and uncaring. Must be the weather or something - there have been a few people on the various forums who have met aggressive and unkind doctors this week. It may be how some of her male counterparts behave - I've met that myself a couple of times and it infuriates me as if you complain you are immediately labelled as racist - but that is NOT the way the role of doctor should be played.
Maybe ring his office and ask if you can stick to pred until you see him. Of course if you want to take it you should. It's just the circumstances of getting it prescribed were not very collaborative to say the least!
