Gout attack

I’m having a very painful gout attack. I’m down to 4.5mg of Prednisone. I’m worried that this will somehow cause me to have a flare. Should I go up another 5mg for a few days? Would that help protect me from a flare?

Did you flare last time you had a gout attack?

This is my first attack.

Where do you have Gout ? I think my husband may have it. He's been suffering a very painful knee. No idea one could get gout in the knee. many, many years ago he had it in the joint of his big toe...cortisone injection sorted that out. Now doctor thinks the pain in his knee could be gout so having a blood test to check his uric acid.

Pred is used to reduce the pain in gout - couldn't risk colchinine with OH so he got 20mg pred for 5 days, Worked brilliantly.

Would you expect to flare with an episode of gout?

I always worry that any new inflammation might upset the apple cart. Sounds like I can try upping my Prednisone for a few days to get the gout under control. Thanks.

What do you have for the gout? Has it been diagnosed? Uric acid tested? Maybe you need to drink more - water that is, not wine ...

My mom, sister and brother all have had gout. I’ve just seen them when they’ve had a bout with gout. You’re right, I have to learn to drink more water. I know dehydration can cause crystals to build up. I’m skipping my wine until I have this under control. Worked in my gardens the last couple of days and it’s been very hot. Maybe too much sweating and not replacing the fluids I need. Thanks for the good reminder.

A Gout attack is PAINFUL to say the least. Only thing to help is lots of water. I am one of the lucky ones (I always cross my fingers when I say that)😂 and I've only had three attacks in the last 10 years.

If I could hop I would! Anything not to step on that foot. I think lots of water is the answer. Thanks! This too will pass.

I was diagnosed with gout many years ago. Have been on Allopurinol since then. I also take Vitamin C daily.

Have had PMR since December 2018, but gout has never bothered me during this time.

Hope you have upped the pred - I say ....... no harm to add that 5 mg fir a week -10 days and drop straight back to previous pred point after that . Gout is painful ! Hope it goes away soon .

My dad had gout for many years. It was very painful. His ankles and elbows would swell up something awful. The worst news for him, was the Dr, telling him not to eat shellfish or drink BEER. He drank every day of his life. I am going back decades here so I guess there was no drug for it at the time.

About 13 years ago we went out with friends for dinner. I had stuffed sole. It was stuffed with crabmeat. We rarely got out with friends and had a wonderful time spending 4 hours in the restaurant. When we got up to leave I was limping to the car. My foot was noticeably sore. The next day it was extremly painful. I could not even put my shoe on. So much so that I went to the walk-in clinic. As soon as I pointed to the sore spot on my foot, the doctor said "You have gout. I don't seed to see or do anymore. Definitely gout she said" I have been on Allopurinol ever since then. I have never had a second attack. But my doctor says that I must stay on the Allopurinol because my blood test continues to show something about uric acid.

I understand that gout runs in families. I’m sorry you had to fall into that category. I live by the ocean and eat lots of fish. I guess it finally caught up with me. Thanks for that info. I will check into that medicine. Hope you can eat fish now.

Regarding the fish, absolutely, I can eat all I want. I never had a second attack in all these years. But I've never gone off the Alopurinal either. Whenever I've asked my doctor why am I still taking this? She always points to my uric acid which is included in my annual or semi-anual blood tests

My bright spark of a husband was put on allopurinol while in hospital when they saw his uric acid level. He had had an attack of gout in the past and had a second. Some weeks after starting the allopurinol the uric acid had fallen - so he decided to stop the allopurinol. Within a few days - gout was back. I really wasn't too impressed!!!! He is back on the meds ...

Thanks PMRpro, Well then I will take a lesson from his lesson learned the hard way, and stop wondering and asking the doc if I can go off it
