It has been nice without as many cars and plane. There are still some trains I think, bit I haven't heard them.

When I get up in the morning its so peaceful no cars or people around just bird song.

Although we are noticing more people walking later in the day ,I am afraid the nice weather over this weekend in UK will see more people out and about .

In some respects I hope we have a horrible Easter next weekend and maybe people will stay in .

in reply to Rose54

Yes...people seem to flout when the sun's out!! Didn't mean to rhyme...

I did wonder if the police and national trust etc will block of areas that people go to. There are 12 hours you can have a walk....a walk not a hike. But some always believe they are special and exempt. 🙄

Isn't the birdsong getting louder 👏👏

Pleased to hear it! - at least you won’t get your Sandwich snatched if you have a sit out in your sunny garden today for lunch then.....

A wonderful thing I have noticed here an hour north of Detroit, Michigan (sorry if I mentioned it before) is that so many people are out and about hiking in nature, riding their bikes, keeping their distance but still out in nature. Just now we are seeing folks wearing more masks as the CDC has just asked for us to do so (cloth as can't get N95's) as they are out and about. We have a lake I jog around and I've seen all kinds of wildlife coming out as the weather warms here (60 degrees today). Snakes sunning themselves and lots of new song birds. So that is a positive during these difficult times.

It is ....snakes 😱

Beautiful to look at and I have held one, but out in the wild...walking down the garden and do a face to face! Eeek

I couldn't live anywhere with lots of snakes...😱

As a teacher, I always had a classroom snake - LOVE them! Mine were gentle and beautiful corn snakes. I would pass them around the circle to help desensitize the children of their fear of snakes... it worked! I had a pet alligator and turtles too as a child (and many other pets).

The practice of hiking is locked down here. The "advice" is to only drive to walk if absolutely necessary, walk from your property. They have enacted laws in relation to it all and given police powers to try and manage movement and gathering amongst other things.

The thing that forced the UK gov hand and caused the total lockdown for most of the "kingdom" was that thousands of cyclists and hikers went shoulder to shoulder in popular places the weekend after the shops were raided for toilet roll. That brought lockdown (which should have been in place weeks earlier). People can exercise once a day...a walk, cycle etc as near to home as they can.

Having checked that if on steroids...certain dose, and amount of time...."shield" seems to be the bracket we are in, but I am struggling as are many to order online, my problem is I`m 68, OH 74, none of the shops (I have cards for them not OH) have contacted us obviously...so none will prioritise , and they are saying too busy only vunerable and elderly slots to be entered now!....we are in a catch 22 it seems....am I missing something here, I`ve rung a supermarket, she said go on the Gov website to register..easier said than done!.......OH is happy to shop....I`m not, it bothers me him going outside.....

Have I pred head??...thank you for any suggestions other than getting very skinny....no food!

in reply to Longtimer

I think I get you...I felt the same then got a text from Tesco this morning saying they had received info regarding my status and the priority slots were for me/us. I did get a slot on the 24th. But I have no one to pick food and meds up. My neighbour has helped but her son is isolated too.

I was more and more distressed this week by the lack of movement in this process. Did you fill in the online vulnerable register??

gov.uk/coronavirus-extremel...

I was told on the phone last week that the local council are there to pick up all problems and I understand are coordinating the food boxes. You can find the details of your local forum on this link.

gov.uk/guidance/local-resil...

I hope you get sorted. If you are "officially" shielded you still seem to need to fill it in online. Good luck.

Thank you for that....what a mess for many of us...I will go on that website you have sent hopefully this won`t be for long, will probably get the text too late when it`s easing... once again thank you....

in reply to Longtimer

No problem. Honestly the top of my head nearly blew off on Thursday in sheer frustration!

Mine has it`s gone out of the bl...y window....we don`t need this added stress!.....

I keep saying this too will pass....now going out side in the sunshine and hear the birds sing!!......

in reply to Longtimer

Yes. That's what you need to do. I listened to one of the few bit of classical music I like. Guaranteed to bring pulse rate and blood pressure down.

Wow, I did not know that! We are blessed to live in a subdivision with a park that completely surrounds a lake. There is a woods that is between the homes and water and provides private paths to walk or bike on. So we put on our masks and go out when we like with strict orders to stay 6 feet apart and no gatherings at all, no crowds, no close contact at all. Also,, they still let us kayak one in a boat, or boat and fish with only 2 in a boat that must live in the same household, i.e. brothers, mother and son, etc. Sooo glad for that but it is a rural area so there are fewer people density-wise than in New York City, or Los Angeles, or Detroit. Each state has varying degrees of shelter-in-place, alas, our president does not appear to want to take charge and call for a full country "lock-down". Thanks for the info!

What amused me is that in the 1960s a town not so far away from there had flocks of sheep all through the centre even on busy summer Saturdays.

I loved this sentence which I heard in Stacey's voice...from Gavin and Stacey...🤣😂🤣

Really enjoying making sourdough bread every other day for me and my daughter.

Still working full time from home (key worker) but it's so nice to have the time to do some baking and the weather is lovely.

in reply to Coffeebeans

Did you make a sourdough starter? I have got yeast coming but prefer sourdough. I don't have much flour at the moment.

Coffeebeans profile image
Coffeebeans in reply to

I was gifted a starter from an italian neighbour, hers came from relatives and has been on the go for 100 years! It's very good.

Flour is an issue, I've found Lidl and independent places are more likely to have it

in reply to Coffeebeans

Wow! That's brilliant. 100yrs!!

I have an order from Tesco on the 9th that should have flour but who knows. It's been on and off. I will try a small place. Until then... flat breads if I include bread, will do.

Rugger profile image
Rugger in reply to

I make all my own bread and keep a few 500g packs of 'bread mix' in the cupboard and use that as a 'starter'. 1 pack will raise an additional 1kg of flour, but I imagine the bread mixes are in short supply, as well as flour. I've got a batch rising as I write! It makes 4 loaves - one to eat fresh and I freeze the others.

I hope you get the things you've ordered.

Thank you for all you're doing for us.

in reply to Rugger

It's terrible trying to get flour. It's been on and off my order about 4 times. Trying again but don't hold out much hope. It was one of 10 items, including yeast, that was unavailable. The suggested sub for yeast...lemon juice.

Enjoy your bread. I try not to eat it much but some bread is welcome at the moment. I made a pastry less homity pie last night as I get potatoes in my veg order. I had to super freeze the rest really quickly or it would have been sitting in my belly. 😊

Positive News on Stephen. I have just blocked and copied it. We had arranged a wine for Erika and a brandy for me at 9pm. We are at opposite ends of the Country.

Evening (deleted my name).

I am sat with a glass of wine tonight ... Cheers!

Better news today, Steve is now off the oxygen and doing ok

His stats are 94-95 - so that's great

Temperature good

blood pressure 125/77- so also good

We hope as long as all stays as it should he can be home Sunday

He will have a slow but positive recovery...

The first thing he wants when he gets home is a hot bath and a plate of:

Corn Beef Hash*

Same time tomorrow stay safe

Erika X

* No change there then. It is his 'comfort go to food' when he is unwell. Mine is mashed potato with butter & pepper.

I would take odds that you all have a special food as well.

The emoji is 'Tough times don't last. Tough people do'.

I sincerely hope that emoji applies to everyone on here, who is struggling with PMR and GCA or both.

Thank you all for caring and stay safe.

And mature Cheese, bliss x

in reply to Rosbud

Oh yes...strong mature cheese

I was fortunate (she repeats), to get on the list for the delivery of an organic vegetable box which has basically been the only food coming in my house for 3 weeks. The good thing that has happened is I am cooking different meals than my usual portfolio. It's been interesting searching for recipes I have most of the ingredients for, or only half and adjusting it. I haven't hit a dud yet from an aubergine and pasta dish to roasted beetroot with a green bean and cabbage warm salad with a blue cheese dressing. I am tempted to have the beetroot one again but recipes often disappoint the second time as the memory is often wonky. Anyone else eating "new" meals out if necessity?

I do have some energy to cook being locked in, rather than walking the dog. I will enjoy this and will add some to my long term recipes portfolio, but I can't wait to get out and about with me and my dog...

Tribute to the NHS Staff

and all Volunteers

This is not mine but I asked the source could I share it to HU. As long as it is not for a newsletter or financial gain the source was happy to share.

'll tell you a tale, that's been recently written,

Of a powerful army, so Great it saved Britain,

They didn't have bombs and they didn't have planes,

They fought with their hearts and they fought with their brains,

They didn't have bullets, armed just with a mask,

We sent them to war, with one simple task,

To show us the way, to lead and inspire us,

To protect us from harm and fight off the virus,

It couldn't be stopped by our bullet proof vests,

An invisible enemy, invaded our chests,

So we called on our weapon, our soldiers in Blue,

"All Doctors, All Nurses, Your Country needs you"

We clapped on our streets, hearts bursting with pride,

As they went off to war, while we stayed inside,

They struggled at first, as they searched for supplies,

But they stared down the virus, in the whites of its eyes,

They leaped from the trenches and didn't think twice,

Some never came back, the ultimate price,

So tired, so weary, yet still they fought on,

As the virus was beaten and the battle was won,

The many of us, owe so much, to so few,

The brave and the bold, our heroes in Blue,

So let's line the streets and remember our debt

We love you, our heroes,

Lest we forget

Very moving, as is the Thursday evening 'clap for our carers' and others too. Our neighbour is an ICU nurse at our local hospital - a lovely young woman who is dedicated to looking after such patients.
