In December I posted that I was going on a once in a lifetime trip/cruise to South America and Antarctica. I took advice from this group and paced my activity, took extra medication and generally looked after myself. Well, it was incredible to see such a magnificent pristine place in fair weather. Penguins, whales, seals and seabirds in abundance. Icebergs 50 plus feet high. I wish you could have been there too. I did get a cough due to the air conditioning which I’m not used to, living in Scotland, which felt like it was turning into something nastier so saw the medical team and got antibiotics and sorted me out in a few days. It was a magical trip and I’m so glad I did it. So to those of you struggling with PMR there is light at the end of a sometimes dark tunnel. PMR is still with me and some days I still get pretty fatigued but with good planning, pacing and a few glasses of wine I had a fabulous adventure.

PMR and Antartica
Brilliant! I’m so glad it went well. What an adventure. It’s a trip I’d like to do sometime too. It’s funny isn’t it, travel and holidays always seem very daunting but I’ve found I invariably cope and indeed feel better once I’m actually there!
So glad you enjoyed it Janet & had a fabulous time! 🐧
Thank you - it was amazing.
A trip I'd love to do but I don't see it happening as a couple! Not OH's thing at all. Our Alaskan glacier trip was brilliant though!
My husband had booked us to go (from UK) to Seattle this summer for a month (mid August to mid September) and do an Alaskan cruise while we’re there as well as touring Yosemite etc. Now I’ve got PMR we were considering cancelling it but the pred seems to be working and we’re still procrastinating about the cruise. I actually have Primary Progressive MS as well which thankfully currently seems under control through diet and other lifestyle adjustments (OMS programme) but one of the MS issues is, I don’t cope that well if I get really cold, and my leg gets a little stiff which would make ‘leaping’ into and off smaller transfer boats an issue 🤔. Does anyone whose been on the Alaska cruises have any points, info, thoughts on doing one while (hopefully only a little) less sprightly than usual? Thanks for any thoughts 🙏
I’ve not been on an Alaskan cruise and I am sure promoting a certain company is not allowed on this site but in the spirit of being helpful in the context of PMR and disability in general I would say that Holland America in my experience was excellent. They have accessible cabins, excursions marked out at various levels, extremely helpful staff. I saw many individuals with mobility and other issues on the cruise I was on all being given good support and customer service. I must state I’ve only been on one cruise with them but found them good. Hope this doesn’t contravene this sites rules. Many of us struggle with finding suitable holiday options when managing PMR or other health problems.
It took me 15 years to persuade OH to cruise and he loved it. So much so we booked another trip to Australia/New Zealand whilst on board. Alaska sounds fabulous too.
The Alaskan cruise we went on was a bit of a disappointment - all about shopping and horrendously expensive trips that weren't PMR-friendly! I'd prefer a smaller ship but there weren't other options for the dates which were fixed.
Is it possible to personal message on here? Would you mind if I picked your brains about these cruises a little more without going too off post in the general board? The ‘shopping’ thing worried me as despite the fact I enjoyed shopping in general, it’s NOT why we’re doing this... and hubby HATES shopping 😂. Just trying to get a. Feel for what one of these cruises might be like😊
That was Celebrity - they go out of Vancouver but are US ships and apparently that's what the clientel want to do. Yawn ... There were 5 different boats and some were smaller so may have very different ethoses. We had done a big package to go with a paid-for trip to a science meeting so were rather tied on dates.
Someone has mentioned Holland America - all the big boats are great for disabled access on board but the trips will vary a bit and I didn't try getting in the little boats!! My cousin actually did the same trip using the ferry boats and private bookings - brave woman that she is - and had a wonderful time. However they are both still extremely fit and active.
I have no objection to you raising a post asking for advice about what to look for in cruises to fit with PMR etc limitations - it may be useful for others and I know there are a few cruisers in the community. I think it would be interesting.
Fantastic, well done
I am so glad that it went well and you braved it. Memories are so precious!
What a fantastic holiday story. Sounds like my cup of tea too. If you want to put up a photo....
1)Make sure the photo is easily accessible and you know how to find it on healthunlocked.
2. On your original post above, press "more" which is at the bottom of you post. Then press "edit," this takes you into your original post.
3. Halfway down the page underneath your writing there's a "add photo"... Click it.
4. It gives you a few option to find the photo. I usually click on "recent" and you will see a drop down box. I usually choose gallery, find the photo, click on it and choose it. Make sure you click the tick. Hopefully the photo will appear on your message, then you just press post.
I hope that makes sense. Good luck!!
