FOOD FOR THOUGHT...

We're all so likely to think that vitamins and supplements are good for us...

Think again...

Now this by no means should be interpreted as a reason not to take supplelments that are making up for a deficiency, but automatically swallow vitamins and supplements may actually be doing more harm than good where deficiencies do not exist.

Last year in the US the supplement suppliers sold around 31 billion dollars in supplements. I read that around 96% were superfluous. Nice Christmas present if you produce supplements though.

This is very interesting. I think in the case of health issues supplements can help, especially older people who may not be getting enough nutrition. But I agree the massive doses are a fad whose time is past. My father had lung cancer and did that multi-vitamin thing back in the late 70s. He died in 1982 just shy of his 65th birthday, but medical errors, not just the multivitamins, contributed to his very poor response to treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if the multivitamins didn't help. The cancer metastasized although in his job he was given a full medical every year so the lung cancer must have been caught relatively early.

Yes I agree Londinium - it smells of "vested interest" the cynic in me doesn't believe a word of it. I have proved to myself over and over that Vit C can send a cold into touch if I take enough.

Anything over the minimum daily requirement winds up in the toilet.

But it's your money.
