Hi I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago and have been on 60mg of prednisolone since, but the last couple of days my tongue has been painful. Any tips on what to do

Thanks

Hi, .and welcome,

Pred can cause oral thrush, I had a couple of bouts when on high doses, do you think it could be that? Have you checked with doctor?

Bit more info would help for this specific question, and in general, would be good if you could update your profile, especially country - our advice may vary depending on where you live,

In the meanwhile, this might give you a bit more info -

Thanks for quick reply, I haven’t checked with the doctor as yet as it is quite difficult to get an appointment on the same day. And I feel like it’s one thing after another at the moment and they will think what now 😢

It is definitely worth going so that you can start treating whatever it is quickly.

Things like Thrush caught early can often be treated with a short course of antifungals and can clear up quickly.

You are only at the beginning of your treatment and getting the inflammation under management so it is best to get help for any infection or injury as soon as possible at this time , just so that it doesn't possibly cause your GCA to Flare up while it's still being brought under control.

You could also go to a pharmacist. I did and used the treatment they advised and it worked!

I hope they don't feel that way. I. E what now.. They should be thinking what can we do now to make your life easier. 🌻

Thanks for your reply, I just haven’t had good experiences with my doctors but will have to get an appointment to get it sorted thanks

It seems a common tale I'm afraid. I turn into a mess in the surgery. 😜🌻

Hi Dexmas, when I was on high doses I too had a very sore tongue. I got Daktarin gel for oral thrush from the pharmacy (uk) and told the doctor and she said that to continue with that. It did help and settled it down.

Is your tongue sore or just achey? One of the symptoms I have had with GCA is an achey tongue, like a stiff muscle, which us what it is I suppose. Not all rheumatologists accept that tongue pain is part of GCA, although jaw pain is a classic sign, I find they go together.

Hi yeah it is a sore tongue not achy

I find if I splurge and eat too many sweet foods (fruit or sugar containing) I get tongue sores. Laying off anything sweet, drinking plenty of water and religiously brushing my tongue when I brush my teeth resolves it.

Hi - welcome to Club Hell. Painful tongue? Does it go with painful jaw - also known as jaw claudication? Prednisone will sort that out in time. But, like DorsetLady says, thrush is a common side-effect. Plagued me right throughout. I was given Nilstat Oral drops (nice cherry flavour) and it worked.

Cheers from New Zealand
