But you see I'm not skinny!

scatsβ€’ in reply toConstance13

All things are relative! Next to me you are slim, you even have a waist.

Thanks for this Constance, as you may have guessed I have not been near a gym for years, probably my idea of hell, especially if it has mirrors!

β€’ in reply toscats

You will be fine. You can squint and go mirror blind😜. I do if I have an off day. Other times I have a good old look. They won't make you do anything too rigorous. On the off chance they do... Ask them to film it. πŸ€πŸ’œ

Oh God yes!! We have to get our laughs where we can!!

I stopped looking in the mirror when my face ballooned and i didnt recognise myself!!

You make out like you are a hippo and i know fine well you are not and you actually had trousers on the other day!!

scats profile image
scatsβ€’ in reply toYellowbluebell

More of an elephant!

They were footless tights, and they came off as soon as I got home because anything that goes around the waist is uncomfortable at the moment!

I was offered hydrotherapy this week - I can't find my swimsuit - can't actually remember when I last wore it even ...

scats profile image
scatsβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

I was dreading them suggesting that for me, I have never yet found a cossy that was long enough in the body. I decided the least they would get me in is t-shirt and shorts!

I can't imagine anyone would get you to do anything you didn't want to!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toscats

I'm looking for options but had mentioned I used to do aquafit - but that wasn't quite the same as the hospital pool which wouldn't be an on-going thing, I would have to go to the local swimming pool. Which terrifies me as it is large and loud and full of tourists summer and winter - and once I take my specs off I am lost!

scats profile image
scatsβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

I can identify fully with that. The noise of all the people would only make it more disorientating.

You need a rich friend with a private pool....we could all benefit from one of those!

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyedβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Don't they have any of those special sessions set aside for local , ladies or Over 5O's swimming , or maybe Aquafit classes via Exercise Referrals like in the UK which only have small groups?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toBlearyeyed

No - not that I could find 4 years ago. There was an over 50s class that made it to local TV but the way it was portrayed made me cringe! Very loud awful jazzy music and they all looked about 90! The swimming club woman said it had been done to look more trendy and wasn't really like that. But it only ran intermittently and she has never contacted me as promised. However, my physio this week was amazed I'd not been told about the rheuma and heart charities who run courses for members. Since membership is only 20 euros a year and runs from January I may investigate that - they have both a dry and a pool class. But only one evening a week for the rheuma stuff here and I doubt the heart stuff is any good for me although they do offer a trial. What puts me off pool work as much as anything is the thought of leaving the pool and getting dressed, hair dried etc etc in January at minus lord knows what temperatures...

I suppose the trouble is people are still climbing mountains at 70+ here!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

One evening a week is better than none!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toConstance13

It isn't the one that is the problem! It's the time of day! We eat in the evening so it affects himself - and it is cold and dark in January!!!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

Oh I agree! I could never go swimming in the evening. I don't eat anything after 5 pm but all that undressing, showering, exercise and dressing just before going to bed !?!

β€’ in reply toConstance13

I always want a swim around 9pm.have for years but finding a warm pool at that time is impossible.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyedβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Yes that is an effort.

I put my swimwear on before I go out and have a rest before going to the pool.

I spend a bit less time in the pool than I could manage energy wise so that I can have enough left to spend time under a warm shower , getting rid of the chlorine and rotating my joints to cool down.

Then I dry in the warmest changing room ( for the babies!!) and I dry my hair with a mini hairdryer that I take with me.

I will often go and sit in the cafe area and have a hot drink before venturing out unless I am getting a lift so that I don't have to worry about extra walking or public transport.

The classes my friend goes to are part of the Exercise Referral Scheme and run by the Heart or Arthritis Charity in the area , so they are small , only 10 people per session , they have a music and non music version.

I will happily go on my own on Ladies and Over 50's night as it's quieter , but go in the babies pool to do my exercises as it's warmer , nobody else goes in there so I can enjoy myself.

In school time it's also quiet in the day , but our leisure centres aren't fun palaces so they aren't popular with tourists , it's more likely to be overcrowded on the beach

( with flipping selfish , noisy jet skiers!!) .

I did go a few times to a slide pool which is my Mum's closest with her and the girls and it was bedlam , I know I couldn't do that just now.

Hope you get somewhere with it , the Charity Groups may well be worth it.

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebellβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Same here with glasses off. I can never find my way back to the changing rooms! I used to wear contacts when diving and swimming but optician frightened the living daylights out of me about infections from diving and i ha nt worn them for that ever since.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyedβ€’ in reply toscats

A number of the people of all ages at Hydro or Aquafit wear a t-shirt over their swimsuit which they tuck in the legs while in the water some also wear long loose swimming shorts , be it Males and Females , because it makes them feel less self conscious .

My physio actually also wears a rash top ( tighter water sport wear ) and long board shorts so it isn't odd. And you don't feel uncomfortable if you have to work close to each other when you learn the moves.

I have my short length long sleeve swimming rash suit ( bit like a wet suit but you don't need a tin opener to get out of it!) , Gloves and swim shoes , plus tinted goggles of a size Jacque Costeau would have been proud of . I have to for the compression so it stops my limbs dropping off ( as in to sleep , not literally falling off in the pool and giving everyone a bit of A Fib!πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚)

scats profile image
scatsβ€’ in reply toBlearyeyed

It could be a good mornings entertainment watching us lot trying to get into wet suits. I've never heard of a rash suit, must look it up.

I bet you look very, eh, eye catching!

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyedβ€’ in reply toscats

It's what surfers etc wear under their wet suit or between sessions in water. You can get full suits or tops and leggings or Capri shorts , with different arm and leg lengths , it is as stretchy to get on as swimwear but slightly thicker with some more compression to add warmth and also UV protection , my long sleeve one has a front zip and inset bra so it's really a lot easier to get on than a swimsuit.

Most trendy beach sport types will wear little loose colourful shorts over the leggings of a rash or wet suit in or out of the water so that they don't show all the bumps and curves.

If skinny surfers and outdoor swimmers do it for fashion you can get away with looking trendy while doing it for confidence.

I also have a waterproof headband to keep my head from aching and stop water getting in my ears.

leisurepro.com/blog/scuba-g...

tdisdi.com/6-key-difference...

Does this help? You can use them for other things besides diving though.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

At least I know the difference now.

I must admit I have never actually seen anyone wearing either. Not living near the sea, or being interested in diving it's not surprising.

As I very rarely make even my swimming costume wet these days (even with every facility you can imagine for an oldie) I feel a bit ashamed. I definitely plan to go tomorrow - but, as you know, "tomorrow ever comes".πŸ˜‚

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebellβ€’ in reply toConstance13

I used to teach diving so was constantly in cold water and my brain doesnt work well when j sm cold.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toYellowbluebell

j sm? Is that supposed to be "I am"?

Mine doesn't work these days whatever the weather or the water temperature!!πŸ˜‚

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebellβ€’ in reply toConstance13

Yes it was meant to be i am, but like you my brain isnt brill at the moment but not sure i can blame pred any more!!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toYellowbluebell

You can't blame age either - not like some of us!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

β€’ in reply toBlearyeyed

They sell full length costumes down the road for Muslim women.... Didn't nigella or someone wear one on the beach.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyedβ€’ in reply to

Yes my friend has one , it looks more like a wet suit , no skirt or head gear like Nigella but really simple to get on , unlike a wetsuit.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

Can't you afford a new one Pp? We'll have a 'whip-round' if you can't!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toConstance13

scats has it right!!! It isn't cheap going to the local swimming pool - it's one of those super-dooper- slides and playing about jobs aimed at the tourists. Residents get 10% off - how generous! All I want is a plain old-fashioned quiet warm pool where I won't get drowned by others ...

Swimsuit - why would I buy something I'll not use? I don't do beach or sunbathing - so wear lightweight trousers and t-shirts even on the campsite. But this week going into town to shop wasn't an option!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

Is the weather still bad?

You should have moved to a German Spa town - only people with arthritis etc etc want to 'swim' (great exaggeration!!) in 30 degs plus. Peaceful movement for all.πŸ˜‚

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toConstance13

I know - that would be very attractive!!

This morning we can't see the village for fog - temps rising enough to create dunst from the lying snow and the airflow is still relatively damp but warmer at altitude so the cold air sinks. It is glorious a bit further up above the soup in the valley though. I think most main roads are now open but the avalanche risk is still high. The rail line is closed - the supporting embankment was washed away a bit further up the line and the rails were just hanging in the air!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

Unbelievable weather throughout the world. Fires in California & Australia, flood in England and many other parts of Europe, snow heavier and deeper than many years before.

Even politics has gone mad in the whole world!!☹️☹️

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toConstance13

Forgot to add - Entrance fee €10 for 2 hours, €4 for "add on" hydrotherapy (20 minutes). Great value!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toConstance13

The prices seem to have gone down a bit here! But they are just to get in - no courses or anything I could find last time i went up to ask. There is a swimming club that does courses (pay extra) but I'm waiting yet for them to get back about when one would start!!! The primary need is ease of getting in and out of the water - our pool at the gym in the UK had a flight of steps with a handrail - I can't use a ladder to get out!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

Hand rails everywhere - double in places for people with real walking/balance difficulties. Too warm for teenagers and children (can only be admitted with adults) and anyway "boring" no running, no slides, no diving in. Aren't we lucky?

I bought one to keep the tummy in but it now makes me feel like its pushing through my back
