Just wanted to thank those of you who kindly replied - I do appreciate your advice and support. It got so bad last night that I took some extra pred anyway and that did help. However I need to see the GP as I don't have that many spare. Whether she will give me more is the unknown. The medics are fixated on steroid reduction! I will let you know ......

Sorry your doc is on the "steroid reduction" track...
With PMR, it seems we are so individual that no textbook provides any accurate pred/symptom management that fits everyone.
I was diagnosed August 2013, and through ups and downs, am now at 8 mg pred, and holding. (I have been as low as 2 mg, several times, before flares).
Soon, I plan to try a .5 drop, and fortunately, my rheumy leaves my symptom management up to me and my judgement.
Hang tough with your doc, take someone with you, if that would help...you are living this illness, and you need the medicine that manages the inflammation/pain, as you experience it. There is no valid reason to precipitate a Flare, just because an ill informed doc is on the relentless downward track.
If you had diabetes, there would be no discussion regarding reduction of your insulin, unless there was sound reason for the reduction ...it is no different with PMR, except the symptoms here are severe pain, instead of rising blood glucose.
I am not a medical professional, and the above comments are my opinion from years of experience.
