How strange - especially since a study decided coffee HELPED relieve mtx intolerance!

I have a sad history with coffee, which I love but which definitely doesn't like me. I take MTX too these days, but the coffee story predates my illnesses by a couple of decades.

So, about 20 years ago I started vomiting violently after drinking coffee. In those days I drank it with milk or cream, plus cappuccinos when I was out. I stopped the vomiting completely by switching to black coffee after I read that some people can't take the combination of lactic acid in milk and the acids in coffee. I soon got the taste for strong black coffee, but after a while I started having very painful and debilitating heartburn which once led to a heart attack scare. After that I made the hard decision to give up coffee altogether. Occasionally I feel terribly deprived, but always comfort myself by remembering that I'm saving a lot of money since good coffee is very expensive.

By the way caffeine wasn't responsible either for the vomiting in the first place or for the later heartburn, so decaf didn't help me at all.

I like good coffee - as defined by good here in Italy or in Germany, different but both can be outstanding. I made the mistake of trying some of OH's breakfast coffee in Albuquerue - -oh dear lord NO!!!! I did go through a phase of it triggering an episode of arrythmia but that seems to have improved too.

Cant imagine having to give up coffee as well as carbs!! I do love proper coffee but try and limit it and dont have it later in the day but luckily no side effects. My OH will drink any old garbage as coffee.

People tell me all the time that they just couldn't do it, but in fact it was less difficult than you might think.

I was out and about a few weeks ago dnd didnt get my normal quota of coffee and had a banging headache probably from the withdrawal!! I definite sign i shouldn't give it up!!

I didn't have the terrible caffeine withdrawal symptoms because fortunately I also love tea. I just upped the number of cups of tea that I drink each day.

Hi, hope you don’t mind if l ask you some questions?.......

How long have you been on MXT at what dose?

Do you take Folic Acid at what dose for how many days?

Are you sick every time you try coffee or just on MXT Days?

been taking mtx for 6 weeks..one tablet a week 10mgs. i also take folic acid 5 mg 5 days a week (not on mtx dose day) vomiting always in the morning as I had a coffee yesterday afternoon and it was ok. go figure !!!!!

You are still quite new to MXT & it does take some adapting to, have you spoken to the Rhuematology Team? The simple reply is to stop coffee for now then try to reintroduce it slowly.

I spent a month eating basically only chicken & gradually it improved, there's info in the link l sent you that discusss coffee.

Wishing you well
