By the way, are the coffee drinkers still drinking coffee with PMR/Pred?

Just wondering if those who were coffee drinkers prior to diagnosis drew the line at giving up their daily “cup of Joe.”

I've been drinking coffee since I was 7. 2 1/2 cups every morning, small cups, not mugs. I won't give it up. Rheumy said it was fine--said he had some patients who drank 2 pots!

Good to know Rheum approves.

Saddo here,.. no caffeine, no alcohol, no drugs and no smoking (called ‘straight edge’ these days by younger folk with matching ‘black cross’ tattoo, I learned this week), no processed meat or sugar (ok occasionally I lapse and have a gluten free cake!). I could go on but I’m boring myself...

Same here. No more coffee, etc. 😔

Do you feel the better for this? Is it helping you?

Pongo13 profile image
Pongo13 in reply topowerwalk

It helps my sleep (which has been dismal) - I am on amitriptylene too but don’t take regularly as I don’t want to become addicted. Yes, I do feel better for making these changes. No sugar has been a revelation in terms of no more hunger pangs. X

You're not boring ME, Pongo13! I have a similar diet and it feels good to know somebody else has gone this far to try to manage their health!

Thanks! (Just bought some broad beans - with a name like that I’m thinking you like all beans too!) x

BeansHB profile image
BeansHB in reply toPongo13

I love beans! However, they are one of the things I've given up while on this journey. I hope to be able to add them back into my diet as my autoimmunity subsides. I was able to add them back into my diet when I had active Lupus, and still have it go into remission. So, fingers crossed, the same with happen with PMR. Enjoy your broad beans!! Yummm.

We only get broad beans for a few weeks here - just when they are in season. No frozen ones - which I don't understand.

I never drank coffee before pmr,I have two mugs of latte a day now and too many teas!

I love my two mugs of coffee daily. Is there something I have missed? Should PMR’s not drink coffee? Or is it just part of the ‘clean’ eating kind of craze, where everything ‘nice’ is bad?

3daysinjuly profile image
3daysinjuly

Lol. I’m sure it is harmless. I thought I read somewhere about caffeine and adrenals. Pmrpro....am I dreaming or did I see this?

GerriMc profile image
GerriMc in reply to3daysinjuly

Caffeine relaxes smooth muscle. It’s added to a lot of pain meds.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to3daysinjuly

I'm sure I remember someone claiming it is bad for our adrenal function. I have my doubts that the odd cup of coffee as drunk in most English-speaking countries is going to to much harm! As they drink it here now - that's another matter!

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina in reply toPMRpro

I remember a Turkish cup of coffee - the spoon stood up in it!

That's the sugar isn't it? We gave up drinking coffee at home when we lived in Germany - a colleague made the usual filter coffee by filling the filter paper with coffee, 3 or 4 times the usual amount!! Gave you wings...

Still have two cups of good coffee per day! One of the last little pleasures left! 😩

So true. Maybe add a walnut scone or a blueberry muffin to go along with the coffee? One bite?

I'd never get out of bed without my morning coffee - sip, check into forum, look at birds on feeders, bellow at marauding squirrel, sip sip sip and up...

I, too, yell at the squirrels in our bird feeder!

Slowdown profile image
Slowdown in reply toRox2112

He's at it again - just banged on the window and he performed a triple somersault around the thin bamboo pole from which feeders are suspended. Entertaining!

Rox2112 profile image
Rox2112 in reply toSlowdown

Hilarious! My hubby greased the feeder pole with vaseline once...that was pretty funny watching the squirrel try to climb faster than he was sliding down!

I enjoy one cup of good fresh coffee each morning. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to give it up, but I'm not aware of any reason to do that... is there a connection between PMR/pred/coffee that I don't know of?! I'd find it harder to give up my glass of wine in the evening than my cup of coffee in the morning! 🍷☕️

OH still drinking 3 mugsful daily

2 cups a day. Sometimes flat white. Sometimes just with cream.

3daysinjuly profile image
3daysinjuly in reply toalvertta

Flat white?

alvertta profile image
alvertta in reply to3daysinjuly

It is a cappuccino with less froth.

teesher profile image
teesher

Oh god no. I'm not giving up my Americano with hot frothy milk for anyone or anything, especially pmr.

Sleep is important to the body and to healing, so timing of our coffee-drinking could be an issue. Some people say no caffeine after 2pm if you want the best chance of a good night's sleep but I find that difficult - I do like my coffee.

Italian researchers have determined that coffee is good for the liver. The equivalent of five espressos (and they can be decaf) is enough to help a fatty liver return to normal. I'm a tea drinker myself and I would never give it up. One must have a few pleasures, after all!

maria40 profile image
maria40 in reply toHeronNS

I was devastated as a coffee addict to be told recently that I should give up caffeine not because of PMR but because of an arrhythmic condition. I switched to decaff and for the first few days I was tired and miserable but now I'm alright but hate passing cafes with the aroma of coffee drifting out. I do know that decaff contains traces of caffeine still, so maybe I'm just getting enough to get by.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toHeronNS

The thought of 5 espressi here makes me quake!!!

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

hence the claim it's not the caffeine which is working.... ;)

It does contain a few nutrients, is supposed to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, may protect you from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s helps your liver, contains antioxidants and makes you happier?

On the downside it can mess with high blood pressure .

Who knows where they get this info, all I know is I have given up so much already I really need my morning “cup of joe”, my birds, meditations, and morning journal writing to start my day.💗

Are you kidding !!!?? - I can't imagine a world without coffee - especially a PMR/GCA 'world'. I drink a strong stove top coffee every morning and another 1 or 2 during the day (not quite as strong though). I find when the DF is really bad it helps me get through the day and feel a little 'brighter' - Plus I just LOVE the stuff. My GP is also a huge fan and is always talking about his next cup - we are a good 'match' in that dept.

sondya profile image

Hi Rimmy - I've got an espresso machine - makes fab coffee. Never buy coffee when I go out; a brick of espresso grind costs the same as one cup at a café!!

And just how I like it - half milk, half two-shot coffee sweetened with a tsp of condensed milk.

To die for!!!!

Hope you are well.

Absolutely. Long before PMR, when my daughter was probably 18 we were relaxing on the couch, and I had my usual mug in my hand. She said, “Dad why do you like to drink coffee so much?” And the thing I still remember saying to her was.....”It makes me hopeful.” And I still believe that now, more than ever.

GCA and Prednisone - was told to reduce caffeine, not cut it out. Nothing will stop me from having my morning cup of espresso! GCA and preddie are in distant past and still enjoying coffee.

Why would you EVER give up coffee....coffee has been y addiction of choice for years, and together with tow paracetamol before a 3/4 hr sleep it makes me feel much better. Who ever tells you coffee is not good for you...tell them to go you know where!!🌞😉alida

I didn’t realise that coffee was particularly bad for PMR. I’d really struggle to give it up. I have one super strong high caffeine mug of black coffee every morning. I cannot function without it, to such an extent that whenever I go away I take my own coffee and caffitere. So no I’ve not given up coffee.

Jackoh profile image

I believe tea has a lot of caffeine in it too. I love my tea and coffee- couldn’t give that up . I do though drink red bush tea after 6 pm so I don’t have any trouble sleeping. Don’t know really if it makes any difference but feel that” I’m doing my bit!” Xx

Drinking my coffee as I read your post! Mainly have decaf but not always. I always meet friends for coffee, and wouldn’t have the willpower to sit there and look at their flat whites, cappuccinos etc. I can’t be tempted by the fruit teas, which look so nice on the packet, but....

I might try and be like one friend and have a homemade nettle tea when I visit and listen to her good advice, but she is strong minded and I’m not!

As for dark chocolate- yum yum

Two 12 ounce mugs a day

yogabonnie profile image

I have given up sugar (failed and given up again) and alcohol and I will NOT give up the coffee!!! I have 2 cups of caffeinated in the morning and maybe 2 cups of decaf at night. I know it is bad for my already bad bones but I make up for that with exercise and calcium...and my attitude with NO coffee would be worse for the world at large!

Noosat profile image

Try some organic stevia instead of sugar

3daysinjuly profile image

Well, the verdict and answer to my question is in, and, overwhelmingly, we are NOT giving up our beloved coffee!!

I continue to have my daily "mug" of black coffee with toast in the early morning. Does not seem to affect me adversely. Later in the day, I sometimes have a cup of green tea.

Never stopped, cut back a bit maybe but I usually have a morning cup shortly after the morning dose of pred...my stomach is fine, so far..I’m not giving up the things that give me a little pleasure..same goes for an occasional beer...

The answer is no, I can't drink tea for some reason? Drink de-caff coffee, on advice of Urologist for bladder problem, not sure if it helps but drink coffee all day.

I drink two mugs a day to handle facing the children I teach (500 of them! but not all at once). I gave it up only when pregnant. I am currently sitting on the lanai in the Florida sunshine (recuperating from yet another surgery) listening to the lovely song of a mockingbird sipping a cup with whipped cream on top. Heaven!
