Doesn’t the water in coffee count towards the daily liquid we are supposed to drink? I know the Austrians always serve a glass of water with coffee but surely some of the liquid counts!?!

Coffee and milk are my preferred drinks.😏

My understanding is that all liquids count towards our daily consumption, and that the belief that we should all drink 8 glasses of plain water a day is a myth.

Fluids are fluids - just some of them make you pee the excess out faster than others. Coffee, tea, alcohol are all classed as having a diuretic effect, they make you pee - but so does water (look on a bottle of mineral water!). The only thing that makes you dehydrated is not drinking enough, whatever it is you drink.

The main reason some nations serve water with coffee is that their coffee is short and strong! In some places in Austria I have been given a glass of water together with wine...

I’d be inclined to drink the water and leave the wine these days!😂😂

Ah, you can’t beat a glass of Austrian wine PMRPro - with or without ant-freeze.....

(D’you remember that blast-from-the-past scandal?)

Oh I do - happened in Germany too if I remember rightly. But it was sweet wines - bleugh!

According to that it was found in German wines because they had been blended.

A friend's father from Heidelberg had an extensive wine cellar and was horrified to discover that a lot of his valuable stock was corrupted! But they did sit down and drink small amounts of some of them! Apparently it was/is legal to add diethylene glycol (antifreeze) to wine in the US! "Improves" it so it can be sold for more...

I am quite partial to a chateau Yquem though with strawberries and cream, if I could afford it!

I am very fond of both Austrian and Swiss wine, in fact I am quite fond of all wines. Do you remember when Perrier had, was it anti freeze in it and Spanish olive oil had something in it too that should not have been there.

You do wonder what they were each thinking? Makes you think - never know what’s in the food & drink we all eat....

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toRokerman

I think it was a way of making money for cheap. The wonder is they thought they could get away with it. Probably a lot do, how long have we been eating horse in our beef burgers?

What were they thinking? We'll make a fortune if we get away with it...

Did you know that US law allows a certain level of rat hairs in food?

The EU is a bit pickier - beware future trade deals with the USA.

They can leave a few hairs in if they like, totally above board.

Yuk! I like my village butcher - you see exactly what is in your mince since he does it in front of you!!!

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toPMRpro

My local butcher does all his own butchering in front of you. My next door neighbour’s daughter worked there as a holiday job and he thought it would be funny to decorate her bike with bits of pig, ears, snout etc! Good butcher, otherwise not so good!

Perrier had benzene in it wasn't it?

We drink a lot of Austrian wine, Gruner Veltliner is our every-day go-to since our local stuff is having an attack of "we're wonderful so you can pay more"! It happened in the region we lived in in Germany too - everyone stopped drinking it and the price fell again!

I am lucky to have family in France and when ever we go to stay we not only get to raid their wines but we get taken into the supermarket and pointed in the right direction of wine we will love. Defiitely not the cheapest but strangely enough no where near the dearest.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toYellowbluebell

Oh yes - mid-price here is top price in the UK. A Brit asked me "will this be good?" of a bubbles just before xmas - at 17 euros I'd hope so! Don't think I have ever paid that for a bottle of bubbles!!!!!

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebell in reply toPMRpro

That's what we found last time we were there. Our trouble is when there are 3/4 different wines poured over the various courses and we nearly always like all of them! Some of them have been given to my cousin from the various farms he goes to and are not available in the supermarket and they are usually the ones we love unfortunately. His wine cellar does get hit really hard when we are there!!!

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toPMRpro

That’s right benzene in the Perrier water! What a good memory you have, it must have been the early 1990s. I wonder how many things like that we don’t know about!

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toPMRpro

It was also the reason they stopped producing those Soda Stream machines for some years because benzene was in the gas cannisters used to carbonate the drinks.

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toBlearyeyed

Oh yes. Can you still get them? Lots of flavours, my next neighbour had one. I thought the taste was horrible. I liked the soda syphons particularly the glass ones.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply topiglette

They are very popular here - we have nice water, people like bubbly water and no plastic bottles to dispose of...

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toPMRpro

Perhaps it was the flavoured ones I didn’t like.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply topiglette

They always kept soda syphons , they brought back soda stream machines ( bit like teasmaids ) a number of years back using healthier ways to carbonate , and allegedly healthier flavourings.

It was a great novelty when I was young , we all thought one of our friends was really cool for having one ( we were 12!) but the thought of them was far better than the taste.

Bit like the pop you get from those machines in pubs really , not as good as the real thing from a glass bottle.

It's all disgusting in my book! Except bubbles water but I do like it from a named source, they do taste different, and diet tonic for G&T - which seems to have reached Italy at last...

They must have read our last chat before Christmas about the dire need for emergency diet tonic water parcels for your G+T!😂😂

All liquids count & Coffee ☕️ is good for our Liver!

I would have it on IV if I could get away with it , and I am one of those weird people

( yes , I can hear you laughing that you know that😁) that can drink a proper cup and still instantly drop off to sleep if I am tired .

It's definitely not the coffee or caffeine in anything that stops me getting to sleep at night , or in the afternoon 💤😪😴😴

There was a test on one of those TV Health programmes last year on a group of office workers , each of them given either , just water , just milk , just coffee/ tea , or tea/ coffee with milk.

They got them to drink through the day then tested their productivity and their hydration at the end of the day.

Turned out that water was not most hydrating . Tea/ Coffee with milk was best . So they proved that the water in hot drinks not only counts but is actually better for you than just water alone .

Many health advocates are also suggesting that real coffee or strong tea are good for your brain health in moderation. They recommend a couple of cups of coffee from their formative studies for slowing down or preventing the onset of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Some caffeine before alot of exercise has been used by athletics for decades to improve endurance and prevent the build up of lactic acid in the muscles that causes stitches. If you want to see which drug that professional cyclists and long distance runners have in their blood , high caffeine levels will be found in them all.

Plus ingestion of caffeine rather than topical use on the skin has an effect on the build up of cellulite , as it apparently plays a part in speeding in the breakdown of fat cells in the muscle stored for energy . And increases the flow of oxygen through the blood cells to remove the toxins .

So , I say my own coffee addiction is doing me good now when people tell me to stop it entirely , it's virtually a health drink with a splash of milk!

In moderation , a couple of cups of the good stuff a day as well as bringing pleasure to the soul can be good for the body too , and topping up the fluids with strong green and black tea, milk or juice is just as good as a glass of H2O.

Now going to stick the kettle on , hugs , Bee xx

I saw that one too, it was quite surprising. I tried a new health kick at lunch today with friends, a battered halloumi followed by sticky toffee pudding! I did share the sticky toffee pudding yum yum.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply topiglette

How do you make healthy battered halloumi and sticky toffee pudding.

I like them both , but have to be careful with the fat, flour and sugar with my other illnesses so any hints on making them fit in a healthy diet would make me very happy!😁😂

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toBlearyeyed

It would be nice if they really were part of a healthy diet wouldn’t it? I cannot think of anything healthy in them, there must be something. The mushy peas perhaps! Except I did not eat those.
