Taking prednisolone morning or evening

Initially my doctor suggested I take pred early in the day. Can it be taken in the evening instead or would this create a problem please?

It is normally taken in the morning to replicate the way your body works & normally produces Cortisol.

Do you have a reason to want to take it at night? Some people start splitting the dose as they get on a lower dose to ease the pain in a morning.

What dose are you on now & how long have you been on Pred?

Kind Regards

Hi

Pred is normally taken in the morning - is there a reason why you cannot take it then?

If you take it in the evening it may disturb your sleep.

For patients on a short course of pred it is better to take it in the morning - that suppresses adrenal function less than taking it at night. We are on high enough doses for long enough for there to be adrenal suppression so then it doesn't make much difference. Some people take it at night to avoid adverse effects such as dizziness. Others find it gives them a better morning and the evening effects are livable with. And some split their dose to get the anti-inflammatory effect to last the full 24 hours. Some people find it interferes with their sleep taken at night. But everyone is different.

Why do you want to take it at night?

Hi

I stopped taking prednisone at night as I’m convinced it caused my insomnia, initially I took it in the morning but was waking in pain. It did help but sleeping at night was a real problem.

I am now back on track and put up with morning aches and pain as it doesn’t last too long.

Doesn't it depend on whether the pred is gastro resistant? I understood that it takes at least 5 hours for it to get onto the system, so I take it in the evening.

Hi Ronnie me too. I think it does make a difference if it's coated. And it's good to wake up with limited pain and stiffness. I am an insomniac so wouldn't blame coated pred for keeping me awake!😴😴

I take my total dose at 230 am. Wake up pain free and doesn't bother my sleep. Taken in the morning took me hours to feel better.

I take my dose last thing at night before I go to sleep because if I took it in the morning I felt weird and light headed as well as in pain all morning. It didn't make any difference to my sleeping pattern, but I guess this depends on your dose. I started on 15 almost 3 years ago. I'm now on 2-1.5 mg. so I probably could change to mornings now, but I haven't.

I used to take a split dose, with half at night. The pred had no impact on my sleep.
