Update on sore hip
Hi
Not sure that bursitis can be detected by X-ray. Think MRI or ultra sound is more effective as it’s soft tissue rather than skeletal problem. But at least it may rule out arthritis.
Let us know outcome please.
Mm, must get my sore hips checked , they are very painful and awaken me at night if I sleep on my side , I have arthritis , so I suspect that's what it is .I was diagnose 3 years ago with GCA and PMR have slowly reduced from 65 mg predict daily to 2.5, but upped it to 3 just to help me cope this last week .I also have successfully been able to tolerate methotrexate throughout this journey with no side effects to speak of . So cold here in southern Australia ( central Victoria ) just now , I find winter difficult , as I feel the cold terribly , so many layers I walk around a bit like a mechanical robot !!!
I told my dermatologist for two years that my hip hurt. She ignored me, and even said something similar “Oh it’s probably bursitis.” But she didn’t tell what to do about it. Finally several appointments later she said “oh get an X-ray.”
The X-ray came back saying possibly avascular neucrosis . I had never heard of that. I went to an orthopedic doctor, he said I don’t think it’s avascular neucrosis.
He told me to exercise. That wore the bone down completely, it was very painful then they told me it was avascular neucrosis and I neeeded a hip replacement.
Avascular neucrosis is the blood supply being shut down to the hip and the hip dies, caused by long term use of steroids. If it is diagnosed early enough and one stays off the hip (use of crutches etc. the blood supply can open up again). But by exercising I wore mine down even faster and I did end up with a hip replacement. I was very sad.
Hope you can get it checked out soon!
I am going through that very thing right now. After much pain and many doctors appointments, crutches i am going to have to have hip replacementin July.
☹️
Hope all goes well. Best wishes 🌸
Forgive my curiosity, but why would you ask a dermatologist about a hip problem? Or were you so healthy that's the only doctor you encountered?
Your subsequent diagnosis is difficult isn't it? On the other hand, I have not personally met anyone with a new hip who wasn't happy with it. Better days ahead!
I too am going thru hip diagnosis. First thought bursitis, then tried steroid shot for hip inpingement, that worked for two weeks. Back to Ortho next week probably for MRI. Next thought was labriel sp? tear. We will see. Glad it's not PMR and I am able to still reduce. Best wishes.
My xrays finally came through as "wear and tear!!" Doesn't resolve the problem nor does it tell me whether the pred is responsible or the fact I already had arthritis in my shoulders before pmr and now its appearing in other joints!!
Before my PMR diagnosis I thought I should be in line for a hip replacement. X-ray clear (one of the few places where there is no sign of OA in my body). Hip pain appears to be referred from the spine, and physio has definitely helped that.
As it is written in my notes I have arthritis and it was always a possibility that it was just progressing I did expect more of a response. I am assuming the wear and tear is actually arthritis but need to see a half decent gp to check, which will take about 3 weeks.
Interchangeable terms for OA effects but not bad enough to say it needs a hip op ...
Well that's a relief as one shoulder replacement is more than enough for now.
